Our comrades must pardon us for presenting our roster in this form; a full roster in the usual form would have cost far in excess of our means. By studying well the abbreviations and directions it can easily be understood. It contains all the names and all the essentials of our rolls, except dates of enlistment, and the individual descriptions.
The roster shows the total membership of the regiment 1,354, of this number there was at the organization of the regiment 19 field and staff and 36 line officers, leaving en- listed men 1,299. Of the enlisted men there were trans- ferred from the regiment, 23 ; promoted to line officers and to field and staff, 38; leaving 1,238 men to be accounted for as follows : Killed, 98; died in prison, 52 ; died in hos- pital, in camp and at home, 92. Total deaths, 242. Many of the last enumerated deaths were doubtless the result of wounds, as well as were many of the 337 discharged. There were absent sick at the muster out of regiment, 50. Absent in prison or otherwise unaccounted for, 14. Mus- tered out with the regiment July 31st, 1865, 595. The lost by battle was over 12 per cent of the enlisted. The total death loss was about 20 per cent. The final muster out was 48 per cent of the whole, as against 52 per cent of those who did not enjoy that privilege. This is a show- ing of loss far in excess of the average in any branch of the service, which attests the severity of our service and the faithfulness and courage with which our command per- formed the service committed to them. The casualties of the field and staff and of the line officers are shown in their biographies. The roster shows the names of those who
344
HISTORY OF THE
died in prison and also of those who remained in prison at the muster out, but there were many more captured who escaped, some soon after capture and some from the rebel prisons. Reminiscences of these adventures would form a volume of exciting interest, could they be gathered and published. Neither the history of the Rebellion, nor the world's history of wars show many, if any, raids so marked with undaunted courage, heroic adventure and sad loss as the history of the Stoneman raid to Macon, Georgia, in July, 1864, and certainly none should enlist the sympathy of the world more than this raid, undertaken with a view to release our suffering comrades from those "hells" of torture, and in spite of the most heroic battling against an overwhelming foe, ending in furnishing many more vic- tims to the demons that ruled them. Such were the dan- gers that surrounded such an undertaking that, until Gen- eral Stoneman and his brigade commanders conceived the project, it had never been dreamed of even by our bold commanding general, and when proposed to Sherman he consented with many misgivings and with constant anxiety for the result, as is shown by his many anxious references to it in his reports.
The following lists of casualties were furnished by our former cohistorians, comrades West and Featherson, by a personal canvass of the regiment before muster out. Some company lists are missing. We give what we have. Some included in these lists are included in our regular lists, but many are not. Some reported captured in this list are reported killed, died, discharged in other lists, at a subsequent time. Most of those marked in this list as captured subsequently escaped from the enemy :
