Report of Auto Fire Apparatus Committee.
The committee appointed at the town meeting a year ago to investigate Auto Fire Apparatus offers the following as a report of progress: The committee has spent much time in looking into the more widely known makes of Auto Fire Apparatus, and is of the unanimous opinion that no more horse drawn apparatus should be bought for the Town of Norwood. In a short time it will be necessary to replace the hose wagon now located at the Central Fire Station. When this is done, the committee is of the unanimous opinion that it should be replaced with an Auto Combination; a piece of fire apparatus which carries two chemi- cal tanks and one thousand (1000) feet of hose. While the initial cost of such a piece of apparatus is much in excess of a horse drawn combination, the cost of maintainence and up-keep is far less. In every other respect also the Auto Apparatus is far better than the horse drawn vehicle. Furthermore, every one will appreciate the advantage of having a piece of apparatus which can reach the outskirts of our town in the quickest possible time and also the advantage of getting to a fire a few minutes sooner than is possible with the old style apparatus.
Respectfully submitted, F. G. ALLEN, J. F. BOYDEN, FRED E. COLBURN, DR. THOMAS F. CARROLL,
Committee.

Art. 12. Report of committee.
At the last town meeting the committee consisting of F. G. Allen, T. A. Houllahan and W. H. Bigelow was appointed to secure an option on land suitable for a schoolhouse lot and play- ground for the Balch School district. Your committee looked the ground over thoroughly and came to the decision that there was no land in this neighborhood really suitable for the purpose excepting land in the immediate vicinity of the present Balch School location. The committee therefore secured an option on about three and one-half acres of land extending around the present school lot. The option secured is for ninety days, and the price is 6 cents per square foot. A rough plan gether with the option is filed with this report.
1
27
As this committee had no discretion further than securing the option it is possible that a purchasing committee, if such is appointed by the town, will be able to secure a better price on this lot. The assessed value is materially less than the option price, but the land selected by your committee is one of the choicest parcels of the whole estate.
Respectfully submitted,
F. G. ALLEN, Chairman, For the committee.
The Option.
Norwood, Feb. 27, 1912.
This option for ninety days given by James M. Folan, agent for A. G. Hyde & Sons, New York City, owners of the land surrounding the Balch School, Norwood, to a committee con- sisting of Frank G. Allen, Chairman Thomas A. Houllahan and Waldo H. Bigelow, on a tract of land adjoining and abutting said school lot on three sides as shown on this option and con- taining about 3.52 acres of land for town purposes.
The price of said land to the town of Norwood is ninety-two hundred (9200) dollars.
JAMES M. FOLAN, Agent.
Report accepted April 1, 1912.
On motion by Mr. Oliver J. Barr :
Voted: That the selectmen be, and hereby are, authorized and directed to purchase land, not to exceed four acres, ad- joining the Balch School lot and on the northerly side of land of John Folan, for the purpose of locating thereon and on said Balch School lot a twelve-room schoolhouse and for the purpose of a public playground for the Balch district; and that the sum of nine thousand (9,000.00) dollars be raised and appropriated for said purpose. And further voted that a committee of five be appointed by the moderator to secure plans and estimates
28
