AMESBURY EPISCOPAL CHURCH RECORDS.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH .*

It is said that the first Episcopal place of worship in Amesbury was in the meeting house of the First Amesbury Church, in the north-east corner of the cemetery at Bartlett's Corner. That church left it in 1716 to occupy the new meeting house about one mile further west, and nearer the center of the town. Perhaps a new house was erected on the same lot in the cemetery, or on some other lot near by, either at that time or at some later date. This was afterwards moved away and made into a dwelling house. Rev. Matthias Plant, of Newbury, wrote in 1722 that he had " a pretty church at Amesbury " and had "preached there for many years." Rev. Edward Bass, missionary, of Newbury, sometimes preached in Amesbury, 1760-'68 -- in a private house about 1760. In 1762 it was reported that a church had been built. Perhaps this was the one erected about this time at Pond Hills, called " King George III Chapel," where Rev. Moses Badger, of Haver- hill, officiated till ordered off by the government in 1778. No ordained clergyman of this denomination seems to have been set- tled in either Amesbury or Salisbury, and there was no fully or- ganized church, till well into the 19th century.

In 1747, Rev. Matthias Plant, of Newbury, received £15 11s. 2d. from the Amesbury parish rate, on account of the churchmen, of whom the following is a list :

John Bartlett John Hooke Gideon Lowell

Thomas Hibbert had been dismissed, but his followers had organ- ized a new Presbyterian Church* and a "Free Society," with Mr.

Hibbert as pastor, without a salary. A new meeting house was built at Bartlett's Corner, quite near the house of the First Church. The undertaking met with bitter opposition, however, and soon after 1804 the large meeting house was converted into Capt. Valentine Bagley's barn, close by the "Captain's Well " of Whittier's poem. Merrill's History gives, as the principal sup- porters of Mr. Hibbert, under the name of Presbyterians :

Joseph Adams*

Eliphalet Lowell

Oliver Titcomb

Thomas Boardman*

Benjamin Lurvey

Ebenezer True

Timothy Challis

William Lurvey Daniel Tuxbury

BAPTIST CHURCH .¡

This church, comprising members from Salisbury, Amesbury, and South Hampton, was organized Sept. 27, 1780, as a branch of the Brentwood Baptist Church. Dr. Samuel Shepherd, who was born in Salisbury, East Parish, in 1739, and educated as a phy- sician, was pastor of the parent church. The following is a list of the constituent members :

William Bagley John Morse

Mary Flanders

Ephraim Carter

Mary Brown

Mehitable Flanders

Moses Chase

Abigail Carter. Hannah Goodwin

Barnard Currier

Mary Chase Eunice Gove

David Currier

Anna Clough

Abigail Morse

Jeremiah Flanders Olive Clough

Rhoda Ring

Thomas Flanders Abigail Currier

Sarah Ring

Isaac Morrill

Susanna Fitts

Hannah Woodman

At the time of organization, in 1780, Moses Chase was licensed to preach, Barnard Currier was elected deacon, and David Currier, clerk. "Elder Moses Chase " was born in 1736, ordained in 1789,

. These three are given as from Salisbury, and perhaps others may have resided in that town. David Tuxbury seems to have been a leading spirit during the whole of the society's existence.

! " Historical Discourses," by Rev. B. P. Byram, printed at Salisbury in 1960, 120 pp., furnishes the information here given.

FRIENDS MEETING.

The records of the Amesbury Meeting begin in 1702, ami extend down to the present time. The meeting was first .: Hampton, then of Seabrook, and afterwards of Amesbury. Th. records for Amesbury and Salisbury are not distinct from the others, for the members lived in Amesbury, Newbury, Salisbury. Seabrook, Hampton, etc. Incomplete records of births, marriage. and deaths of families appear, but residences are not given ; and we are told that there are no lists of members for definite period -. Some portions of these records may appear in later parts of the- volume.

Merrill gives the following list of Quakers who were taxed in Amesbury in 1760 :

David Challis John Huntington

Joseph Pressy

Peleg Challis John Huntington Jr.

Jonathan Reed

Thomas Challis

Abner Jores Aaron Rowell

Ebenezer Currier

Ezekiel Jones

Jacob Weed

Daniel Hoage

* There must be an error here, either in age or dates.

t This Barnard Currier could not have been a Presbyterian supporter of Mr. Hibbert [p. 561]. Either there were two persons of the same name, or Merrill placed Barnard Currier among the supporters of Mr. Hibbert because Currier's name appeared as a prominent opponent of the "standing order."

EXPLANATIONS.

EXPLANATIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS.

The letters in brackets after dates indicate the records from which the dates are taken.

The first date given for a will is the date of the will itself, the second is the date of proof.

Under each surname, each individual is designated by a certain number. When the history of that person is resumed, the same number is repeated, in bold face figures ; and when the same per- son is elsewhere referred to, the number is sometimes prefixed in parentheses, to identify the individual. The sign + indicates that the family record is continued, either in this or in the first volume.

Small figures after a Christian name designate the generation. Names placed in parentheses after a person's surname indicate the father and other ancestors of that person. The use of SMALL CAPITALS in printing a name shows that a further account of that person will be found in these volumes under that surname.

The double date is given for the year, between January 1 and March 25, before 1752, wherever it can be determined with any degree of certainty.

Inscriptions on Amesbury tombstones were printed in Essex Co. Hist. and Gen. Register, Ipswich, 1894.

He was " late of Wells but now in Cape Porpoise," "planter," June, 1666, and John Sen. was chosen on grand jury for C. P., Feb., 1678-9 ;

* Sv. states that he was of Malden [per. bro. of James] in 1653, where he had a son Benjamin, b. Dec. 18, 1653. This hardly seems probable, as both John1 Sen. and John2 Jr. were apparently in Wells in July, 1653, and neither appears to have had a son Benj. who lived to maturity. One authority states that John Barrett had land on the Agamenticus River as early as 1641. It has also been surmised that John of Wells was son of Robert. engaged in the Maine fisheries which had led to settlements on the coast near Winter Harbor and Cape Porpoise " many years before 1639," under the auspices of Walter Barrett and other merchants of Bristol [G. R. 1854, p. 140; 1888, p. 257]. " Robert Barret the Frenchman " was fined for being drunk in 1647, York Co. A Robert d. in Charlestown, Mass., in 1675[Sv]. Humphrey Barrat of York Co. oath al. 1658.

Sv. gives several other early John Barretis, of Charlestown, Chelmsford, Taunton, &c .; also other Barretts of Hartford, Newport, Concord, Cambridge, Malden, &c.

t If she was the mother of John,2 she must have been born as early as 1618. May she have been a second wife ? Her mother was apparently b. ab. 1600; but we should infer that Mary was " a child."' in 1638, on the " Bevis," unless there were other chil. who d. young. Both father and mother mention ber in their wills, 1661 and 1677.

# The Barretts owned land adjoining that of (2) THOMAS1 WELLS in Wells, in 1657; and Rev. (7) THOMAS2 WELLS left money in the hands of John- Bar- rett to pay for land bought in 1669. We had supposed that Rev. Thomas? Wells' dau .- in-law Rebecca mar. into this family [p. 351]; but this branch of the Barrett name may have become extinct in the third generation. A John Barrett, aged 16, came in the "Ann and Elizabeth," 1635; but prob. neither (1) John1 nor (2) John.2

but a John was of Wells at various times 1667-'82, and prob. in '84. A John was of C. P. in 1670 and also '80-1,* grand jury. Wife Eliz. ment. as late as 1682, in deeds. Children :

3 I JOHN,& b. bef. 1660 [and prob. bef. 1657]; liv. 1678-9; per. left no chil .* 4 II MARY,3 b. -; m. ab. 1673-'80, William Thomas, prob. of C. P. He recd. grant of land there in 1681. Both were dead in 1720. Chil. : Hun- nah, m. Joseph Field, " fisherman"; Mary, m. Peter Grant, " fish- erman"; all four were of New Castle, N. H., in 1721.i

5 JOHN BARRET of Marblehead, m. Ann Est. dis- tributed Jan. 7, 1594-5, when wid. Ann was wife of Pentecost Blackington, of Attleboro. Children:

6 I. RICHARD, b. -; "eldest son "; res. Marblehead; " only bro." John: Barret ap. adm. est. Sept. 11, 1703.

7 II JOHN, b. -; res. Mb .; father-in-law Blackington ap. adm. est., in right of his children, half blood to the decd., Jan. 3, 1709. It would appear that this branch of the Barret name thus became extinct.#

* Mary Barrett of C. P. ap. adm. est. of her husband, John Barrett, March, 1689-90. This may have been a wid. of John,3 or possibly of John2 [a 2d wife]. It is hardly prob. that it refers to John,1 who left a will, and had been dead 25 yrs. John2 and John3 may be confounded in some respects, but the above seems the most probable arrangement.

t They asked, in March, 1720-1, that Thomas Perkins, of Cape Porpois" [Arundel], be ap. adm. est. of their grandfather John Barrett, of C. P. Perkins was ap. April 4, 1721; and the four above named sold him their rights in the est., May, 1721. Their mother, Mary3 (Barrett) Thomas, was called " the sur- viving child of our grandfather."

ELIAB3 LITTLEFIELD (John,2 Edmund1), of Manchester, Mass., sold land at Cape Porpoise, formerly John " Barrot's," Dec., 1715, to Thomas Perkins Jr. of Topsfield; "Barrots' falls," where Barrot's mill formerly stood, ment. Joseph Leach, of Manchester, and wife Patience, also sold to Thomas Per- kins, of C. P., in 1718, land formerly John Barrett's, where Barrett's mill for- merly stood, in C. P. It is possible that Eliab Littlefield's wife Rachel may have been granddau. of (2) John2 Barrett, and dau. of Mary,3 but no relation- ship is given. Eliab Littlefield and his wife were both dead in 1718, and Joseph Leach was their son-in-law and adm.

# In 1759, wid. Abigail Andrews of Marblehead sold house and lot of her father, John Barrett of Mb. decd. This must be another John.

Samuel Barrat of Boston, 1729, mortgage from Sam. Stacey of Marblehead. Robert Barrett of Nb., "ship carpenter," bought land in Nb. 1731.

Samuel Barrit and wife Lydia of Rowley and several others, children vi Jacob Hardy of Bd., 1737[Sm deed]
