SIMMONS FAMILY.


was of Ip. 1637-'56, where he recd. grants of land, built, bought, occupied, and sold houses, bought and sold land ; not on list of commoners, 1641; was appointed to keep one of the herds of cows on the north side of the river, 1643-'9; was to keep the chimneys clean in 1647. He was of Hv. as early as 1657, where he was to keep the ferry on the " Great River"; recd. land there in 1658, and another grant from Hv. in 1664, to keep a ferry on the Row- ley side of the river, over against the town of Hv. He was prob. drowned Aug. 16, 1667 [Es. Ant., 1901, p. 14]. Record of chil. not found.

detained in prison more than a year; but the other two were soon set at lib- erty. Their father, Robert2 Wadleigh, and his wife Sarah, petitioned the king to pardon their sons in Feb., 1683. The king summoned him to visit England within 6 mos., March 5, 1682-3, where he had both the Gove insur. rection and his own difficulties with Walter Barefoot to give him cox- cern. Robert2 reached this country early in May, 1684, on his return from Eng. Gov. Cranfield was much afraid of the influence of Mr. Wadleigh over the people of N. H. after his return, and was still more fearful of the effect of the news of Gove's pardon. [See Bell's Exeter, pp. 351-2, and N. H. Provin- cial Papers, vol. 1, p. 459.]

* Their dau. Mary Rishworth, b. Jan. 8, 1660; m. 1st [2d?], ab. 1680, John Sayward of York; 2d [3d?], ab. 1601, James Plaisted, also of York. Both her husbands were prominent in town affairs. By John Sayward she had four daus. and one son, John, b. 1690. [See the "Sayward Family."] In the winter of 1692 she was taken captive by the Indians, with two of her daus., bp. Dec. 8, 1693, in Montreal. The eldest, Mary, b. 1681, entered a con- rent and was bur. in Montreal in 1717. The other, Esther, b. 1685, was bp. as "Mary Joseph." The mother was back in York in 1696, when she was presented for not attending public worship. In 1718 she deeded land in Wells, given her by the will of her grandfather, Mr. John Wheelwright; and she was liv. in 1722. Why she appears in that will, 1679 [p.356], as Mary "White" is unknown, unless she was a young wid. when she m. John Say- ward.


For the captivity in Canada see G. R. 1874, p. 160, where " William Sayer" should be John Sayward, as is proved by York Deeds, Book 7, fol. 97, and other records.

The earliest record of the Amesbury Friends is of a monthly meeting at Hampton, 15: 6 [Aug.] : 1701.


The following, under date of 23d. 8 m. 1701, is a list of sub- scribers for building and furnishing the new meeting house a' Hampton, the house "to be sett up, or redy to sett up, by the 30th day of the 3d month 1702":
