* A Benj. m. Hannah Wells, July 17, 1794[Nht].

t We have been unable to ascertain the parentage of (92) Francis, but have marked him as of the second generation. The earliest record we find of him is as a witness to a paper dated Oct., 1673, found at Concord, pertaining to Hampton, made by Thomas Bradbury. Mary Weed was also a witness.

Tradition in Warner states that the father of (92) Francis was Philip [or

95 THOMAS3 DAVIS (Francis,2 ___ 1),* of W. Amesbury and Newton, N. H., " husbandman " [No. 8, p. 131] ; m. Dec. 15,

Francis] Davis, b. 1626, came in the " Confidence" in 1638 and m. Gertrude Emerson ab. 1650; that their son (92) Francis was born June, 1655; that he m. Oct. 20, 1680, Mary Wells of Portsmouth, who was born in Newfoundland, June 20, 1658; and died May 21, 1733. It is also stated that (92) Francis d. June 6, 1737, which is manifestly wrong. As dates are given so minutely, it seems that they must be based upon some family record; but we have failed to find any record, public or private, to verify the statements given above.

There was a Philip, age 12, who came in the " Confidence," as servant to William Ilsley [p. 215]; but he is supposed to have gone to Hartford and m. there.

Francis and Mary Davis had four sons and one dau .: John, b. 1674; Ger- trude, b. 1676; Thomas; Francis, b. 1687; and Samuel. John, Thomas and Gertrude were doubtless chil. of Mary Taylor; but whether the others were chil. of the same Mary is not certain. It is possible that Mary Taylor d. ab. 1678, and (92) Francis Davis m. 2d, Mary Wells in 1680. The A. records are missing, 1677-'85. If Sam. was b after 1687, the birth should be on record, though many births are missing; but as Francis is called "3d son," it seems prob. that Sam. was younger. The mother of Francis is not called second wife on the record, as was sometimes done. In the est. of Walter Taylor, the son-in-law Francis Davis appears, without the mention of Taylor's dau. Mary as then living.

It is worthy of note that the above traditions come from Warner descend- ants of (96) Francis, who may possibly have been a son of Mary Wells. There were five Davis settlers in Warner between 1762 and 1790; (420) Francis, + (455) Gideon, 5 (457) Francis, 5 (456) Robert, 5 and (446) John,5 four of whom were descended from (96) Francis. The name Wells, which occurs among his de- scendants, is cited in proof of the Wells ancestry, but Paine is also found there, and both may have come from the names of the two A. ministers.

* In 1710 he sold land in A. " laid out to my [grand] father Walter Taylor, late of A., decd." The same year he bought land originally laid out to Walter Taylor.
