AMESBURY SECOND CHURCH RECORDS. West Parish. [Now Merrimac.]
At a meeting of the inhabitants of the West Parish in Ames. bury, held July 6, 1725, Capt. Foot was chosen moderator and William Moulton clerk. Capt. Foot, Ens. Jacob Sargent, and Thomas Stevens were chosen assessors, and Samuel Silver collector, for that year. At the same meeting it was voted "that Mr. Joseph Parsons should be a settled minister among us if wee could agree with him," his salary to be " four score Pound a year for the first two year and after that one hundred a year with the use of a Passonedge." This Mr. Parsons is doubtless the on- who was then settled over the Second Salisbury Church. By a record of Nov. 3 it seems that Mr. Parsons had declined the call. and the meeting proceeded " to appoint men to look out for some other man to preach among us." May 19, 1726, the church " was gathered," the following ministers of the gospel being present : Messrs. Wells, Cushing, Parsons, Tufts, and Brown. At that time articles of faith were adopted, fifteen brethren signed the covenant, as given below, and Mr. Pain Wingate was elected as their pastor.
The book from which the following records have been copied was kept by Rev. Pain Wingate, H. C. 1723, the first pastor. ordained June 15,; 1726, died Feb. 19, 1786. It has not been con- sidered an official record of the church, and has always been the property of his descendants. The book is a paper-bound volume of about 120 pages, 8 x 64 inches. It contains, in addition to the
* Only these few marriages were copied. The others are, presumably. entered upon the town records.

portions here reproduced, 50 pages of church records from May 19, 1726, to May 17, 1782, in Mr. Wingate's handwriting, 5 pages of dates of the Lord's Supper, and a few Wingate family data. The owner, Prof. Charles F. Richardson, of Dartmouth College, has kindly furnished this copy for publication, and has also compared the proof sheets with the original records.

* The church records give this name "Tappin Ordoway," in this place, hut they agree with the Wingate records in giving "James Ordoway " on the moll " from other Churches."
The church records omit Joseph Sargent. They also add "Rev. Pain & mgate from Hampton, N. H." The Wingate records seem more reliable than the church records. For instance, Elisabeth Lancaster is incorrectly Even " Elijah," and Esther Kelly [p. 500], is "Eliza" on the church records.

* Merrill's History of Amesbury, p. 184, gives a list of 123 men who were taxed in 1726 for the support of preaching in the west parish; but only 15 of them are included in the above list of church members.
t No dates are given in this record, except the closing one, 1761. The list of originai members probably ends with Phebe Tucker or Jane Fowler. Jon athan Kelly and wife were dismissed from the Second Church in [West] New- bury, "to join Rev. Mr. Wingate's church," in April. 1730. Enoch Chase and wife were dismissed from the Amesbury First Church [p. 490] in April, 1744. It is evident, therefore, that the dates of admission after Jane Fowler range from 1730 to 1761; and all but the last two probably before 1745.

. To this point the church records correspond pretty closely with the Win- records, though there are errors and omissions in the former. For istance: Dec., 1727, Timothy Colby is omitted; Aug., 1729, Martha Sargent and Samuel Sargent are omitted.
The entries in this list from June, 1730, to Nov., 1774, are entirely wanting is the church records. In their place is a list of 98 names in the printed manual, "collected from various sources " and bearing no resemblance to this ## Some of the 98 may come in the gap between 1774 and 1789.
