*The General Assembly, or Committee of Safety, by act of April 12, 1776, desired all males in the colony above twenty-one years of age to sign the dec- laration promising to oppose the British with arms. The selectmen of each town were required to report the names of those who refused to sign, as well as all who signed. 8,199 persons signed and 773 refused to sign, as printed in Vol. VIII, N. H. State Papers. This furnishes a valuable list of the mature male citizens of the colony, though the returns from Dover, Exeter, Hampton Falls, Lyndeboro', Poplin, and Warner are missing. As most of the names are autographs, they throw some light upon the spelling then used by the family.
