[See pp. 309, 417.] He sold house lot in Hm. in 1643 ; recd. grant of land in Wells in July, 1643; bought house and land there in 1645 ; with others bought land of the Indians bef. 1661; was of Cape Porpoise 1663 and later. He was prob. at Exeter, Jan., 1644-5; oath al. at W1., July, 1653; on jury, York Co., 1645, '55, and '58. He d. June-Oct., 1670 ; will June, 1670 ; rec. March 13, 1670-1. Chil .:

* There is little doubt that John of Hm. and of Wells were the same per- son, though some have supposed that the latter was in York Co. bef. 1643, and D. Hm. states that the former was "again in Hm." in 1649. Dow has confounded (1) John1 and (26) John,1 however, as others have done.

There was an " Elick " Sanders in York Co., prob. 1643 or later. A Wm. Saunders is named among the early settlers of Him. A Wm. Sanders and wife Sarah were of Kt. 1691; he was dead in 1700. A Samuel Sanders of Is. Shoals, 1708-9.

t Nathaniel Sanders of Gloucester, "shipwright" (wife Abigail), and Mary Pearce (wife of Samuel Pearce), of GI., 1713-4, were chil. of John San- ders, late of Capo Porpoise, decd. They were chil. of (28) John,2 or per. grandchil. of (27) Thomas2 or (28) John,2 provided the latter had a son John.'

# Will of STEPHEN BATSON, of Wells, 1673-4, ment. son JOHN. See p. 578. Another John Batson, also of " Caporpus" [Arundel], was dead in 1721, leaving a wid. Hannah, then wife of James Stillson, and only two sur- viving chil .: John Batson and Mary Parsons (wife of Thomas), both of New Castle, N. H.

" The name of his wife, Ruth, is found in a deed, in 1694. We have not found it on the Nb. records ; but, as the eldest dau. was named Ruth, it seems prob. that Ruth was the mother of his children.

OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY.

Wenham, 1643-'5 .* C Nb. states that Wm. Sayer and wife, Ben ;. Morse and wife, John Sayer, and others, all of Nb., became mei. bers of the First Baptist Church in Boston in 1681; and that . branch of that church was formed in Nb. in 1682.j He was li !. 1697; adm. est. gr. his son in law, John Emery, March 1, 1702 -; Children :

2 I JOHN,2 b. Aug. 24, 1645[Nb]; m. Feb. 18, 1675-6, Sarah Poore. +

3 II SAMUEL,2 b. Nov. 22, 1646[Nb]; m. March 13, 1671, MARY' EMERY ..

4 III RUTH,2 b. Sept. 16, 1648[Nb]; m. Aug. 27, 1667[Nb], (9) BENJAMIN MORSE. They were members of the Baptist church with 1 ... parents. + 1

5 IV MARY, 2 b. Feb. 7, 1640-50[Nb]; d. June 24, 1659[Nb].

6 V SARAH,2 b. Nov. 20, 1651[Nb]; m. Jan. 15, 1669, (100) JOSHUA" BROWN [p. 387]. +

7 VI HANNAH, 2 b. Feb. 23, 1653-4[Nb]; d. Jan. 25, 1659-60[Nb].

Sept. 17, 1647[Rw]; Ezekiel,2 b. -. EdwardI was bur. March 9, 1673-1 will, 1674, ment. wife Mary, sons John (eldest) and Ezekiel, but no daus. As the birth of the youngest son, Ezekiel, was not recorded, it is possib! that there may have been another Sarah, b. after 1647, not recorded, but liv. in 1660, if not in 1674. Sv. says an Ezekiel was "a soldier of 'the flower c: Essex,' killed by the Indians at Bloody Brook, 18 Sept., 1675." John? ha : chil .: Edward,3 b. 1674, d. 1675; Mary,8 b. 1676; Ezekiel,3 b. 1678; and other". Ezekiel3 also had chil. b. in Rw. A Mary Sawyer d. Feb. 20, 1692-3[Rw].

The will of (1) JOSEPH1 PEASLEY, 1660, seems to show that his dat .. Elizabeth and Sarah were then single, wbile Jane and Mary had recd. their portion and were married. As he ment. his grandchild Sarah Sayer, at. ! his dau. Jane m. (6) John2 Davis in 1646, it seems prob. that Mary m. a Saw yer, unless there was another dau., per. dead in 1660, who left a dau. Sare Sawyer.

While Wm1 Sawyer had daus. Ruth? and Sarah? liv. in 1660, there is n. proof that he had a wife Mary, nor that his wife Ruth was a dau. of Joser !!! Peasley. Edward1 Sawyer had a wife Mary in 1660, but there is no proof that he then had a dau. Sarah. Still, it is possible that (4) MARY2 PEASLEY may have been wife of EDWARD1 SAWYER; but if so, she, as well as her sister (", Jane,2 must have been much older than her sister (5) Sarah.2

The names Edmund Sawyer and Edmund Sayward or Seward appear of the Ip. rec., 1635-'7. Sv. says the first rem. to York bef. 1661. The thr names doubtless belong to the same person.

* Wm. Sawyer recd. grant of land in Sm .; witness of will of Samuel Smith (! Enon [Wenham], both in 1642.

t It prob. soon became extinct, however. The existing church dates frot 1804. Mr. Edward Woodman and wife [p. 365], Abel Merrill [p. 245], and three others are ment. by Coffin as members, in addition to the five gives above.

were a sister of Ebenezer3 Hill and dau. of Roger2 (Peter1), then " Mary Sayer" and "bro. Joseph's dau.," might be the same person; but in the division of the estate of Roger Hill, of Saco, 1696 and 1702, only three daus. were ment., no one of whom could be the wife of Joseph Sayer. Possibly Ebenezer Hill and Joseph Sayer m. sisters; but of this we have no proof.

The wife of Joseph Storer was a sister of Ebenezer Hill, and we therefore consider it probable that the word "and " should be omitted, and that " bro. Joseph's dau." and "Mary Storer" were the same person. This Mary Storer apparently mar. and lived in Canada; for in the will of Joseph Storer, of Wells, 1721-2, he gave a legacy to his dau. Mary St. Germain, " upon condi- tion that she return from under the French government and settle in New Eng."

Whichever of the three is the right Joseph, the dau. was doubtless a young person, prob. a mere child.

NOTE. Generations later than the third are not printed in this volume, unless they are connected with other families whose genealogy is given, or unless the records here given differ from those printed by Appleton.
