COMMUNICATION.

The undersigned would hereby respectfully represent that the safe now in use is totally unfit, and of inadequate size for the purposes for which it is intended; it is one of the old way-back affairs not burglar-proof by any means, and for the last three years the Treasurer has made use of his private safe for the storage of the cash and a portion of the vouchers. Circumstances are such that this practice can- not continue, and an appropriation of one hundred and fifty (150) dollars is asked for, which it is considered will pur- chase an up-to-date safe of sufficient size to accommodate all the books and papers of this office.

GEORGE H. STEARNS.

SCHOOL REPORT.

The School Committee of the Town of Duxbury herewith submit their annual report, together with the reports of the Superintendent of Schools and the Principal of Partridge Academy, for the year ending December 31, 1903.

For the past few years it has been the endeavor of your committee to retain the services of all teachers who have proved themselves efficient in our schools, even though it has required the payment of rather liberal salaries.

The past year we have been especially fortunate in the reten- tion of our experienced teachers. It is with much regret, how- ever, that we report the loss of our veteran teacher in the Grammar School, Mr. Nathan T. Soule, who has served the Town so faithfully and efficiently in that school since it was established in 1895 as a part of our school system. We feel that the high standard which our Grammar school has attained has been in a large measure due to Mr. Soule's faithful and persistent devotion to the work. His genial manner and firm but just methods of dealing with all the vexing problems of school work have endeared him to pupils and parents alike.

For the past year or two Mr. Soule's health has been none of the best and at the end of the fall term he handed his resig- nation to the other two members of the board, and they withz many regrets were forced to accept it.

The vacancy thus caused was filled by the election of Miss Elizabeth A. Haskins, who comes to us with an excellent record as a successful teacher in similar grades of work.

This is the only change in teachers which has occurred dur- ing the year.

All needed repairs have been made on our schoolhouses dur- ing the year and your committee believe that all the buildings are in good condition.
