ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SCHOOL COMMITTEE
OF THE
Town of Duxbury
FOR THE
YEAR
-
I 900.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
William J. Alden, Jr., Henry Barstow, 1902 Nathan T. Soule, 1903
TERM EXPIRES. 1901
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.
EDGAR L. WILLARD, A. M. Marshfield Hills.
SCHOOL REPORT.
In accordance with the established laws of the State, the School Committee would again present their annual report :
There have been few changes in our list of teachers for the past year. Miss Susie S. Boylston, after a long and faithful service, resigned her position as teacher of the North Duxbury school, very much to the regret of both parents and committee. Miss Grace M. Peterson was elected to fill the vacancy. The report of her work thus far is satisfactory. Miss Charlotte A. Tower resigned as teacher at South Duxbury to accept a more lucrative position in Cohasset. The term was finished by substitute teachers, who failed to control the school. Miss Bessie Stewart, a teacher of experience, was elected to teach the remainder of the school year.
On account of the increased number of scholars in the High Street district, the committee thought it best to re-open that school, which was done in April with Miss Grace M. Hastings as teacher.
Much has been said and proposed concerning the consolida- tion of schools for the past four or five years, but as yet not much has been accomplished. At the last Annual Meeting a committee was appointed by the town to consider the matter, procure plans, and estimates for a suitable building, and report at some future meeting. The following persons were ap- pointed : Albert M. Goulding, Wendell Phillips, Theodore Glover, Eugene T. Soule, and Nathan T. Soule. The com- mittee organized with Albert M. Goulding, Chairman, and Theodore Glover, secretary. The report of that committee is printed in connection with this report. One fact seems to require no demonstration, that a new schoolhouse must soon take the place of the one that has sheltered the children of the village district for so many years. Let us hope that one of the first undertakings of our Town in the first year of the twentieth century will be to provide suitable accommodation for the ‘ rising generation.
