This does not refer to how each school sings, because the abil- ity of the children ranges from very small to excellent. Some of the teachers accomplish results that are really surprising with children who had not learned to sing a tone. In this work the supervisor takes no credit, it is due the teacher. The seventh and eighth grades in the village are doing as good work as you could possibly expect from children who have been studying music only four years, and the other Grammar school will do very good work when they get started. The school board has very kindly provided new books for these schools, and the chil- dren are getting much good from them already.
At the Academy, the singing is elective, so the members of the class are all workers. In this class the singing goes along easier than usual, and already there is a fairly good number of choruses learned, including a little voice training and sight read- ing.
In this work of teaching the children to sing, we earnestly wish that all children could sing easily, so to get uniform re- sults, but since this cannot be, we try to do the best thing for each one, as far as we can in the time allowed us.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the teachers for their interest in the singing lessons, and to commend their real- ly excellent work; and let us not forget that in schools where children seem not to be singing well, the teacher has done well to make them sing at all.
Respectfully submitted, LILLIE C. STODDARD.
North Scituate, December 31, 1908.

DRAWING TEACHER'S REPORT.
To the Superintendent of Schools :-
The many changes in Duxbury schools this year have helped very much in grading the drawing, so that the work all round, is very much improved. In the Tarkiln schools particularly, the greatest benefit is shown. The Grammar grades now have entirely different and more advanced work. The addition of the new school at Tarkiln has added so much to my work that it requires more than two days to visit all the schools. The results and grading are so much more satisfactory. I do not mind the extra time which has to be given to it.
The district schools all through town still hold their own in point of numbers, showing that the school population is increas- ing.
During the winter term the work will be chiefly devoted to mechanical drawing, a kind of drawing which anyone can do with a little thought and care, and with very practical results, geometric problems, working drawings, plans, borders, all be- ing done by rule and measure.
In teaching drawing we try to teach, incidentally good taste, which means, simplicity, fitness to purpose and beauty. Let us try to have good taste in our homes, in our schools, in our dress, in shapes, colors and in ornament. All of these things we hope may result from the drawing and allied subjects in our school work.
The Turner picture exhibit held last November in the lower part of the town was carried on by the teachers and pupils. All were much interested and many people had the opportunity of seeing printed reproductions of the world's masterpieces in art and many historical subjects. Each school assisting will have a fine picture for the school room as the result.
Thanking the school committee and teachers through you for their kind co-operation, I remain,
Respectfully yours,
HARRIET J. FORD.
