Nearly every school deserves especial mention for the very creditable work which they do, although almost no two schools have the same lessons, or the same books. Some schools, where there is only a handful of boys, and one or two girls to help out, can give one the greatest surprises in well rendered two part music. The grammar school is do- ing beautiful work in three part music; and at the Academy the class is divided into four parts. Through you, I wish to thank each teacher for the willing and interested work they have given me, even when demands have been great. I am perfectly well 'aware that each has done a great deal for the class they had; and that the difference in results is due to the difference in classes.
Respectfully submitted, LILLIE C. STODDARD.
COMMUNICATION FROM THE TRUSTEES OF PARTRIDGE ACADEMY.
Last year the School Committee, in their report, referred to changes which were under consideration in the accommo- dations at Partridge Academy.
As doubtless all the tax payers are aware the Partridge Academy building, which has been in use for educational purposes for the past sixty-four years, was not intended for just the sort of use to which it is now put. No changes of importance have been made in the building itself since it was first built; and for some years the Trustees and the Principal have all felt that more floor space was needed for recitation purposes. More especially has this want been felt since a third teacher has been employed, and the time of attendance
-79-
necessary to complete four years of High School work lengthened to five years. This fact as explained in the School report last year is due to the lowest grade at the Academy being the eighth or last Grammar grade. The presence of this grade at the Academy is felt by all connect- ed with the educational interests of the town to be a disad- vantage to the best interests of the High School; and we hope that at some not very remote period some plan will be found to care for this grade elsewhere. But even if this change were made the Academy still needs more room; and to meet this need a building committee of the Trustees has, for several months, been at work on plans for an addition to the building which would afford the needed space for labora- tory and recitation rooms. Plans have been drawn, and bids made, which have been in part accepted. The work will soon commence, and will be completed in season for oc- cupancy by the beginning of the next school year. This will necessitate the expenditure by the Trustees of the Academy fund of some $6,000.00.
The trustees propose to take this amount from the prin- cipal and refund it later from the income.
Heretofore the Trustees have expended annually all the income in the maintenance of the Academy, and as the changes planned will use part of this income for several years, it will be necessary for the town to appropriate a larg- er sum for the running expenses of the High School.
But even with this increased appropriation the Trustees beg to remind the taxpayers that they are still getting their High School course at a considerably less expense to the town than they would if it was not for this Academy fund, amounting as it does to something over $20,000, and the pro- ceeds all being used in one way or another for the education- al advantages of the children of the town.
The Trustees and the School Committee working together have under consideration improvements in the High School course which heretofore they have been unable to arrange for, but which will be made possible when the changes in rec- itation rooms now in contemplation are completed.
Signed,
N. K. NOYES. H. E. WALKER. SIDNEY PETERSON, Building Committee for the Trustces.
