It would be a help to have companies formed in addition to the two connected with the engines.
Though we have again escaped a serious forest fire, there is always danger of one. If it should come, we must organize on the ground more completely than we ever have had occasion to ' we plan to use back fires and plowed fire lines more freely.
Outlooks are being established in conjunction with the Plym- outh fire tower for taking bearings and plotting on maps so as to telephone quickly location of fire with increased accuracy.
Our work has been so well thought of that the Massachusetts Forestry Association has borrowed one of our fire wagons to exhibit at the Sportsmen's Show in Boston. The warden is try- ing, in connection with the state forester and others, to get a forest fire system established throughout the state, with supplies at central points, co-operation between the towns and an oppor- tunity to get intelligent help and to use it to advantage from out of town in a serious emergency.
We suggest that an appropriation of $500 be made for fire protection and one of $500 for the forest warden.
Anyone wishing a permit for keeping, storage, manufacture or sale of explosives, should apply to the chief of the fire depart- ment.
I heartily approve of the suggestion in the report of the Ru- ral Society asking for a conservation committee, and believe that much can be done for the prosperity of the town by the concerted action of its residents.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the fire companies and the men who turn out so well to help, for their promptness and energy.
F. B. KNAPP,
Chief of Fire Department and Forest Warden.

REPORT OF FIRE ENGINEERS.
During the year 1908 Engine No. 1 responded to two fires of dwelling houses, one garage and several grass fires where build- ings were in danger during the dry period of July.
The houses were residence of William Hunt, North Duxbury, Jan. 18, and residence of Harry Hunt, Washington street, May 7. The garage was at the Myles Standish Hotel, night of July 12th.
Respectfully yours, CAPT. H. E. MERRY.
REPORT OF CEMETERY TRUSTEES YEAR ENDING JANUARY, 1909.
In addition to the regular work there has been cleared a por- tion of the new part which is much needed for lots.
The lot owners of the Ashdod Cemetery have voted to place that burial ground in the hands of this Board, and the proposi- tion is accepted ; the same conditions and By-laws to apply as are in force in the town records, a copy of which can be had of the Secretary. Referring to the special hardening of the avenues in Mayflower Cemetery, the trustees upon receiving an estimate of Seven Hundred and Fifty dollars for the whole length of the main avenue from gate to gate, believed it advisable to do it. The cost was $759.41, and paid by adding to appropriation of $500; one hundred and fifty dollars from Henry W. Hathaway fund, interest, and carrying the balance, $109.41 from annual appro- priation. We believe it is good economy to continue the work on avenue leading from Tremont Street to that already done, and also from Tremont Street to gate at church entrance, and trust the citizens will give the matter attention
The Treasurer's Report is herewith submitted,
Respectfully,
ELISHA PETERSON, Secy.
