REPORT ON TOWN MEMORIAL STONE FOR THE PILGRIM MONUMENT AT PROVINCETOWN.
To the voters of the town :-
At the last annual town-meeting, you chose me as your Agent to procure a memorial stone from the town, for the Pilgrim Monument to be built at Provincetown, Mass., and made an appropriation of fifty dollars to carry out your vote.
By correspondence and interviews I communicated with the officers of the monument association and learned what they desired from the towns which they had invited to contribute a stone for the monument.
The President of the association, at my request for his op- pinion, advised me to procure the stone from the contractor who was building the monument, and by further inquiry this was found to be at a less expense than it could be had elsewhere, the cost being thirty dollars, and was about to order the same, when the question arose whether an appropriation could be made for this purpose without special authority from the Legislature, and on consulting the town's council was told that the town
-43-
.could not legally make such an appropriation : but having under- taken the work, it only remained for me to raise the money by private subscription.
On stating the subject to Mrs. Georgianna B. Wright, she generously consented to give the full amount, stipulating that she gave the memorial stone to the town, and not to the monu- ment association, so in your name I have presented the stone to that association, which measures thirty by twenty by twelve inches, and has this inscription, "DUXBURY INCORPO- RATED JUNE 17, 1631."
Respectfully submitted, LAURENCE BRADFORD.
January 1, 1908.
REPORT OF ROAD SURVEYOR, FOR 1907.
The $2,000 appropriated for stone road, has been expend- ed on Depot street, from South Duxbury depot to Hall's Corner. I have built 2000 running feet of stone road, 18 feet wide, at a cost of $2,453.12, being about $1.221/2 per foot, in- cluding grading. The road had to be graded the whole length and being a very sandy bottom, it had to be heavily stoned, the old drain across the road having to be taken up and a new one laid. The Standish shore roads have been built at a cost of $419.40. The amount of general repairs has been expended where most needed. There will have to be a fence built at Blue river bridge, and Alden street will have to have considerable work done on it in the early spring.
