High School, 200 00

And the overlay, 375 00

School Fund from the State, 493 46

Dog Fund, 136 52

Total

$2,704 98

Pupils attending High School from this Town were Percy L. Ashley, Miriam Babbitt, Fred A. Boardman, Frances A. Hatch, Edna Hoxie, Eva G. Strange, Edith Maguire, Susie Allen

The appropriation for scholars attending High School amounts to $575.00. Out of this has been paid tuition of pupils from Sept. 1, 1893 to Sept. 1, 1894,$357.50 leaving $217.50 in Treasury to credit of this account. Against this there are unpresented bills for tuition from Sept. 1, '94 to the end of the fiscal year.

REPAIRS OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS.

At the school-house in Dist. No. 3 we have built new steps and relaid the foundations for the same.

In Dist. No. 4 one side of the school building has been shingled and a portion of the underpinning relaid and pointed.

At Dist. No. 5 both sides of the school build- ing have been shingled ; the building painted and new steps are in process of construction.

44

ANNUAL REPORT.

At No. 6 the building has been painted.

For itemized bills for these repairs we refer you to the Treasurer's report.

For the coming year, one side of the roof of the building in Dist. No. 4 should be shingled.

We would also call attention to the lack of room for storing fuel at some of the school-houses.

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS.

Your Committee would also call attention to the great improvement of the schools in towns which have adopted this system.

By the addition to the working force, of a single trained mind, the work is systematized and to some extent brought nearer the standard called for in the best schools in our Commonwealth.

The net expense is very small; about eighty dollars per year. A large part of the schools in the State now come under this law, and the number which have not accepted it is yearly decreasing. No sane man would hire inexperienced men to run his business ; but we are yearly trusting to untried hands the management of our schools, to establish which on a firm basis our brave soldier boys shed their blood like water. On the public school system rests the superstructure of this great Republic, and anything which strengthens it, strengthens the wall between us and the sea of Anarchy which is now threatening to break all bounds and overwhelm our institutions.

45

ANNUAL REPORT.

As a Committee we would urge the acceptance of this law.

Some of the neighboring towns stand ready to unite with us ; only awaiting our action in this mat- ter.

In closing we would ask an increase in appro- priation to an amount sufficient to increase the length of the school year two weeks. Most of the towns around us have from three to six weeks more of school in the year than our own. We think the general sentiment would bear us out in saying that the increase would be acceptable and profitable too parents and scholars alike.
