ANNUAL REPORT.
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
In making up the Annual Report of the condition of our several schools, the committee cannot bestow too much praise upon our faithful, hard working teachers, and in most cases their honest, faithful pupils. For we believe that nearly all our scholars are honest in their intentions, and wish to make the most of the liberal advantages our town offers them in the way of money, good buildings, supplies liberally furnished, and last, but not least, good teachers. It is a fact, and the committee realize it, that mistakes are made in procuring teachers, often times, but our teachers will compare very favorably with those of any other town's in this vicinity. The greatest success is in store for us, if we all work together for the welfare of the pupils. That is what we are all aiming at when these liberal appropriations are made in the various towns and cities, and then the good old Commonwealth stands ready to Iend a helping hand, in any good cause like this. So we thank the teachers and scholars alike for their earnest efforts to appreciate it.
In making up the report, there are some things the committee feel compelled to make a slight mention of. In the first place, one of the worst evils that the commit- tee, and teachers alike have to contend with; is the con- tinual fault-finding with every new teacher, sometimes an old one, that comes to our town. . If a teacher gives up her school, moves away, gets a higher position in some other place, or otherwise leaves the school, a great hue and cry is set up, that the new teacher must not be liked, or given any encouragement whatever. Many a teacher comes to the committee and says that they have not had a visitor for the whole term. Still these non-visi- tors do most of the fault finding. Another great evil, es. pecially to the pupil, is for the parents to take them with them, when they go to see the committee, and have them listen to every word of condemnation against the teacher.
46
ANNUAL REPORT.
Would they be apt to like, or even respect the teacher? The old saying, "As the old cock grows, so the young one learns," will apply very closely to this case.
The committee are willing, and even anxious to meet the parents at any time to hear grievances, if any really exist, not imaginary ones, and will do all in their power to bring parents, teachers and pupils to a happy under- standing. It is not a very pleasant duty for a committee to perform, to turn any scholar over to the State Authori- ties, especially if he happens to be an old and near neigh- bor. But still the laws of the Commonwealth call for it. After this, scholars must attend some school, or we shall be compelled to do so. Parents and teachers are really partners in the same business,-the education of their children.
Equally true is it, that the work of the school cannot reach its greatest success unless parents and teachers are frequently in consultation. Each can be useful to the other. Regarding our text books, your committee would recommend a change in the "readers" that have been in use for a long time, so much so that the pupils can almost recite them without a book. The change in writing books and geographies, has been a great benefit to all, and it has amply repaid the slight cost.
Our school buildings are in good repair, and not much expense will be incurred the coming year, except to en- large the woodshed at No. 3, and partly build a new chim- ney at No. 1. Of course slight repairs are liable to be called for at any time.
We feel sorry that our "Roll of Honor" is so small, and perhaps in the future it had better be. dropped alto- gether. A healthy, strong pupil, living very near a school, has a great advantage over some others, but that is not always the reason for absence from school.
47
ANNUAL REPORT.
A very faithful pupil at the Common, one who was very anxious to be in attendance every day, had the mis- fortune to break his arm within two days of the end of the term. So on that very account, many towns have given up the "Roll," as being of no advantage to the pupils.
In closing this report, your committee wish to thank the citizens of the town for their confidence and assistance during the past year, and the teachers for the zeal and faithfulness with which they have performed their duties.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES W. COOK,
ROLLIN H. BABBITT, School
HELEN R. STRANGE, Committee.
