ANNUAL REPORT.
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
In making up the annual report, your Committee is pleased to be able to say that, with one or two exceptions, everything has moved along very harmoniously the past year. Parents have all seemed to be satisfied with the teachers, and the efforts they have made to promote the interests of the several schools under their charge, and the pupils have fallen in with them, as they should, to encour- age their teacher in their not too easy work, day in and day out, striving with all sorts and ages, of every disposi- tion imaginable, to educate them for every work that may be their lot in life to do.
And the Committee wish to thank them for their ef- forts, teachers, parents, and scholars alike; we have a good corps of efficient teachers and.the Committee has seen fit to engage them for the beginning of another year. We know not what the year may bring forth, but the least we can do is to give them an encouraging word at the send off.
As regards our expenditures for repairs, supplies, etc., we have made them as low as possible, and give the schools what was needed, generously but not extravagantly. A change is needed in our arithmetics another year, as the one in use at the present time is not liked by either teacher or pupil. Other changes may be made at some future time. Some of our school buildings will need painting before long, one or two at a time, but perhaps it will be well to wait another year, hoping the finances of the town will be improved in the meantime.
But the good standing of schools must be kept up re- gardless of finances. It is really essential that some pro- vision should be made at No. 3 District to properly house the fuel. We would respectfully ask for a small appropri- ation for the same.
47
ANNUAL REPORT.
A new chimney has been built at No. 1 District as the old one had been repaired so many times that it was worth- less for what it was made for.
All the school rooms are in good condition, but will need whitewashing the summer vacation.
Before concluding this report, it is befitting that we should say just a word of respect and sympathy for our beloved, efficient, Christian teacher, Miss E. M. Allen, who so long has taught the young people of District No. 5, not only the rudiments of learning to be useful to them in this life, but has always, throughout her whole life, pointed out to them the true path to follow, to make them good citi- zens in this world, and to keep "marching on," onward, and always upward. And we still hope to see her out,and among us again, with her happy good word for everyone, old and young.
Thanking the citizens for their generous appropriation the past year, we respectfully ask for the same the com- ing year.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES W. COOK, - ROLLIN H. BABBITT,
School ALTON W. READ, Committee.
