DISTRICT No. 6.
Charles A. Shaw, Surveyor. $146.59. Expended, $146.71
DISTRICT No. 7.
Charles M. Wade, Surveyor, $260.31. Expended, $266.87
Of the $75 voted to be expended by the Selectmen, the sum of $25.35 was worked out by the Surveyors of Districts No. 5 and 6 in the spring, and the balance was used in the fall in putting in a new bridge, inoving and blasting rocks, widening the road with scraper and cutting bushes. This road runs through a level tract most of the way, with little natural drainage and is now. for most seasons of the year, in a fair condition. perhaps as good as the average of our back roads. Total sum expended on the same, $74.57.

Fellow Citizens :- Your Committee present in detail the condition of our schools as viewed from their stand- point, together with such other information as desired to conform with the requirements.
Our school year ended earlier, than has been our cus- tom heretofore, as the greater part of our pupils are of the younger class, it was deemed preferable to have the longer terms in spring and fall and avoid the inclement season. Estimates for the winter term were based on the sum due from the State Fund in previous years, but by a change in the division of the fund our town received some $90 in excess of former years. Had the fact been known before the schools closed, they could have continued two weeks longer.
The teachers have performed their duties with in- creasing ability and a full understanding of their respon- sibilities : changes have been made only as the situation demanded : employment has been given to five Normal teachers, three teachers from the High School and two from other schools ; we are pleased to report that as far as our information extends, there has been no serious infraction of discipline or violation of the laws of morality by any of our pupils. The general progression of most of them in
39
ANNUAL REPORT.
their studies is highly commendable to them and to their teachers, and in most cases satisfactory to the parents. A serious hinderance to the advancement of some of our pupils is the indifference of some indulgent parents in permiting their children to absent themselves from school, when inclination prompts them, and if the teacher insists on perfect recitations, stay away and complain that the lessons are too hard or long. when the real trouble is that the pupil has lost by his absence in the past, the connec- tion and interest in his studies. Such pupils are a detri- ment by their example, and when present absorb more than their proportion of the teacher's time in the vain endeavor to keep them with their classes.
The' services of our truant officer have been called upon several times during the past year, and we are com- pelled to admit that there is still a field for his duties : but are still inclined to think that if parents would co-operate with teachers and the committee this annoyance might be abated.
ROLL OF HONOR.

Several pupils failed by only one mark.
From all appearances parents. generally, are becoming more interested in schools and the education of their children, as may be observed, by the better attendance, by our private schools, and in sending their children to higher institutions. While it is to be regretted that we cannot supply all that is needed for our pupils, we might at least be more liberal than at present. The State has been more bountiful this year than usual: but what it may do here- after. is a matter for speculation. By the latest report of the State Board of Education, it may be seen that the per cent. of our valuation appropriated for public schools is but 34 mills on a dollar and it removes the town from the 163d to the 198th position among towns and cities in that respect. All will allow that the child. with good instruction is better able to make his mark in life. and might it not be a sound investment to give all our pupils a generous education, that he may " Act well his part " and avoid all liability for his future maintenance?
Your Board would recommend that the sum of $1700. at least. be appropriated for public schools and books. for the coming school year. which sum. comparing our finan- cial condition with other towns. is certainly not an unreasonable amount.
