REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Committee in presenting their Annual Report wish to express their appreciation to the citizens of the Town, as well as to the teachers, who have so kindly co-operated with us in our endeavor to administer the affairs of our schools, to the best advantage, as far as we were able.
It is perfectly natural that criticisms come to us, many times unjust ones, and sometimes personal prejudice against us, make our administration unpleasant, and our duties harder.
But we believe that a very great majority of the people will agree with us that the schools are in a pros- perous condition, with the one exception of tardiness, stay at home every other day, trying, in some schools, to annoy the teacher in every possible way, our schools are running along smoothly, and the pupils progressing as fast, if not faster, than in most ungraded country schools. The visiting agent of the State Board most always makes a remark to that effect, and on the condition and pleas- antness of our school rooms.
Our school buildings need painting, having been neg- lected on account of finances, but at least two of them should be painted the coming year. Nos. 2 and 3 need painting first, and more if the Town sees fit to do so. We would recommend an appropriation for the same. We would also recommend a sufficient sum of money to build or enlarge the wood accommodations at the Bridge Dis- trict. Nearly half of the wood has to be piled up out of doors, partly covered by a few boards, and it is impossible to make a very warm or suitable fire with wet wood.
In regard to the non-attendance in some of our schools, we would ask the question, if any one thinks it a very desirable thing to do, to go to a neighbor and tell

him, or ask him, or her, why his or her children do not attend school? when they know what the law is in regard to it, as well as the committee. Some pretend that they do not like the teacher. It seems a little curious, that if 90 per cent. say the teacher is all right, that the very few should see so much that is bad, or deficient.
There are a few cases in town where the pupils do not like to mind at all, and if made to, a terrible state of affairs, on the part of the teachers, is apparent. So we think, on the whole, if the pupils will try to do their best, with a wholesome backing, on the part of their parents, our schools will continue to maintain the good standing they have heretofore held among the schools of the Commonwealth.
Sickness has caused us to make several changes during the past year. At No. 6 District the teacher went home sick, and we had to replace her with one who seems to be trying to do her duty, and we voted to retain her. Also, at the Bridge (No. 3) we lost a very efficient teacher, by sickness and it looked for a time as though the school would be broken up, but the teacher we have secured to take her place seems to "bring order out of chaos," and we see no reason why the school is not in fair way to recover its lost prestige. We were also fortunate in securing the services of the very able, faithful, teacher for No.5 District. We only wish her school contained 40 scholars instead of the present number.
The rest of our teachers, who have been with us for longer terms, deserve all the praise we can give them, and we earnestly hope they will continue to stay with us, and aid in the good work. If the parents could only be convinced that in opposing the Committee and teachers, continually, they are cheating their own flesh and blood out of what rightfully belongs to them, the children would

be the gainers in the end, and thank them for it, as they become older. Some changes are needed in our text books the coming year. The Committee saw fit to change the " Readers " that have been in use in our schools for so many years, and would recommend a change in "Arithmetics" as soon as possible.
Thanking the citizens for their assistance the past year, and the teachers who have labored with us in trying to do our duty, we respectfully submit the foregoing report.
