ANNUAL REPORT.

At the end of the town's fiscal year, the Selectmen and Overseers of the Poor, made the usual examination of accounts, and affairs at the town farm, and Almshouse, and appraised the stock and personal property belonging to the town: Everything was found to be in a very satisfactory con- dition. The stock is looking exceedingly well, and well up to the mark of former years. In fact, the cows and heifers are more than an average lot. The young animals that the Superintendent has raised, from good stock, promise to pay the town well in coming years, especially if cows keep up to the present prices. There are eighteen head in all including two horses. It may appear to some that the farm ought to show a little " heavier " on the " right side" of the ledger, but at the present low prices for everything, and hard to sell at any price, it looks different to most farmers. As to the buildings the barn is in fair condition, the house tells the same " old story." The back side of the house and cellar is in no shape at all for winter. Vegetables are huddled into one little room to keep them from freezing. Your humble board was glad to retreat up stairs after making a hurried examination of the contents even with overcoats " buttoned up for zero weather."

Something must be done the coming summer to prepare for next winter. The superintendent and wife still give the same satisfaction as in former years, and we would recom- mend that they be retained another year.

Our outside poor have not been very expensive, not as much as if town had not been paid back most of the expense of the Norcutt family.

As regards our Highways, the vote of the town being the same, the Selectmen looked them over, and divided the appro- priation, as in their judgment it was deemed best. The roads are in a "very fair" condition for the money appropriated, and will compare favorably with surrounding towns; the "much needed," and "long talked of" improvement at "Apes Hill" was begun, not finished, at the North end and the "Tory Road" put in a safer condition for travel. It is hoped that

25

ANNUAL REPORT.

other improvements may be made, to put our roads in good shape. The B. & D. Bridge will have to be repaired the com- ing year, as the "draw" is in bad shape, requiring two men to turn it, most of the time, in winter. It is past repairing a great deal, and a new one must come, sooner or later.

Such things as a draw bridge must be kept in repair, and it seems as though our bridge is in such shape at present, that it will not pay to lay out too much in that direction. A new iron bridge, or draw at any rate, will be the cheapest in the end, if properly taken care of, after we get it. In a few places new guide boards are needed, and some repainted.

ANNUAL REPORT.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE PUB- LIC LIBRARY.

At the close of the fiscal year Feb. 15th, 1895, there were 366 vol- umes in circulation, During the year ending Feb. 15th, 1896, 120 volumes were added, making 486 in the Library at present. We have received a few books by donation, but not as many as it was hoped would be given, when we consider how much good is derived from a Library "free to everyone." It certainly is for the good of everyone in the town, to do all they can to promote and encourage everything of this kind ; other towns are doing so, and we can see their nice Li_ brary Buildings or sometimes rooms in the Town Hall, neatly fitted up for the purpose, and one can hardly fail to speak of such things as being a real benefit. We certainly need something in this town, to start "some improvements," if not many.

Of the $50 voted by the town, $49.75 was spent in the purchase of "good books." At least they are said to be good, by those patroniz_ ing the Library.

Fifteen dollars was voted for the salary of Librarian, and she was paid for the year ending Dec. 6th, 1895.

At the close of the year ending Feb. 15, 1895, the Librarian, had $4.32 cash on hand. $1.83 has been collected during the past year, for fines, making $6.15 on hand Feb. 15th, 1896.

As Trustees, we thank the citizens for their generous support and hope their interest will increase, not die out or lag, and that they will do all they can to help a good cause the coming year. We would respectfully ask the same appropriation as last year.
