Apl. 20, 1891; bd. at Ja. Living, July, 1902, at Ja., and to him the compiler is indebted for the record of the descendants of John and Rebecca.

" He was for thirteen years Supervisor of the Town of Jamaica -from 1874 to 1887-and was chairman of the Queens County Board in 1881. He was a commissioner of highways from 1869 to 1872, and justice of the peace from 1872 to 1874. In 1886 he was elected village trustee and served for four years. He was also a member of the Village Board of Education and treasurer of that body. At his death he was treasurer of the local board of the Jamaica State Normal School, and during his nine years' service as a member of that board-seven as secre- tary and two as treasurer-he performed a very valuable ser- vice, and one that contributed very greatly to the success of the institution. He looked after the affairs of the Normal School with as much care and attention as he devoted to his private business, and his associates say that his services, rendered free of all charge, were worth a salary of at least $1ooo per year. The volume of the correspondence was very great.

He was one of the oldest directors of the Glen Cove Mutual Insurance Company, and trustee and treasurer of the Jamaica Savings Bank.

A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY.

He was one of the commissioners of Queens County that had a part in framing the charter of Greater New York and in carrying out the plan, and performed valuable services. He was the last of the charter members of Jamaica Lodge No. 546, F. and A. M., and one of the oldest village firemen, having been for a half-century a member of the department. He was one of the organizers of the Queens County Non-Partisan Taxpayers' Association, and later of the Jamaica Citizens' League.

Mr. Brinckerhoff, when a lad but fifteen years of age, began his apprenticeship as engineer and machinist of the Long Island Railroad, and in two years' time was given charge of one of three or four locomotives owned by the company. In 1854 he went to Syracuse, where he worked as a machinist in the shops of the New York Central Railroad; and the next year was made super- intendent of the construction and repair shops of the Indiana and Grand Rapids Railroad at Adrian, Mich. In 1857 he returned to Jamaica, where he engaged in the grocery business, and by industry and thrift acquired a competency. He was a strong supporter of all worthy public enterprises in his native town, and a faithful and conscientious public official. He left his various offices with a high record for honesty and integrity."

JOHN CASHOW, of Mill Neck, son of John Kirk and Eliza- beth Underhill, b. Dec. 30, 1817; bp. Sep. 27, 1818, in W. H .; d. Sep. 19, 1899, at Mill Neck; m. Hester Craig.

" Ex-Assemblyman John Cashow died at his home in Mill Neck. He was the oldest Freemason in Brooklyn, being a member of Hohenlinden Lodge No. 56, and of Nassau Chapter, R. A. M. He was born at Brookville, L. I., December 30, 1817, and at- tended the district school until nearly attaining his majority. He removed to Brooklyn in 1835, where he became prominently identified with politics.

" He was an alderman for five years, and was chairman of the committee which recommended the resolution providing for the removal of the remains of the martyrs of the British prison-ships to their last resting-place. He was appointed harbor master of the Port of New York by Governor John A. King, reappointed by Governor Edwin D. Morgan, and also by Governor Reuben E. Fenton.

"Mr. Cashow had acted with the Republican party until the campaign of 1872, when he abandoned that party and followed Horace Greeley and the liberal party. In 1880 he was chosen supervisor of the town of Oyster Bay, a position he held for three years. In 1877 he represented the First Assembly Dis- trict of this county in the State Legislature.

"He was for many years connected with the Farragut Fire In- surance Company of Manhattan. Mr. Cashow was a volunteer fireman, the old Cashow Hose Company in Brooklyn being named after him, and with which company he was many years identified."
