Old Island Landmarks

" SEA CLIFF, L. I., June 24, 1896 .- The old Downing home- stead, which is said to have been built over two hundred years ago, has lately changed hands. It has become the property of Charles Nostrand of Brooklyn. The house is badly dilapidated, and Mr. Nostrand, who intends to live in it in the future, will have it partly rebuilt, preserving as much of the old building as possible. The property is delightfully situated on Littleworth Lane, near the shore. Tradition says that the house was built almost two hundred and fifty years ago, but of this there is no authentic record, though a deed is still in existence showing a transfer of the house and land dated one hundred and forty years ago."
