JOHN MONFOORT, son of Peter and Margaret Haff, bp. July 28, 1717, at Ja .; m. Kniertje -. He was admitted as a mem- ber of the church on confession at Redding (Readington), in 1747.
From Corwin's " Manuel ":
"About 1765, Dutch colonists from New Jersey began to pour into York and Adams Counties in Penn. They organized the church at Conowago, about three miles south of Gettysburg.
"Among these were the Monfoorts and Cassats from Millstone, and the Bantas and Westervelts from Bergen Co., N. J.
"The church at Conowago consisted of about 150 families.
"About 1781 these colonists began a second hegira, and in 1793 almost the whole congregation had moved away.
"Attention is called to the first pamphlet of this History, where these Dutch people 'folded their tents like the Arabs and silently emigrated.'"

"I find it quite impossible to answer your letter fully without much delay. I am in my 89th year. . I am also at a loss, though I have spent months of time and have examined all books and records in church and state. I go back surely for five generations and there I stop and wait for light."
