"HUNTINGTON, L. I., "Sep. 9th, 1901.

"MY DEAR FRIEND,-My thoughts come after. I knew that my grandfather Nostran had a sister who married a Baylis of Jamaica (I think James Baylis). This same Baylis was a brother of my grandfather, Oliver Baylis. This daughter of Jacobus and sister of my grandfather, James Nostran, had chil- dren. David Brainerd Baylis, a life-long officer in the South Brooklyn Savings Bank, was one of her sons. David Brainerd Baylis had only one child (a son); his name is Charles Smith Baylis. Some years ago he ran the store of Frothingham & Baylis in N. Y. City. Brainerd lived to be about 90 years old.

"I do not know whether Chas. is dead or alive. The family lived in Henry St., Brooklyn, a good many years.

"So you see my grandfather Nostran's sister married my grandfather Baylis' brother.

"Yours with much respect,

"HIRAM V. BAYLIS.

1692, inventory of the estate of John Hansen exhibited by Gerret Hansen: One house and barn and 35 morgens of land; one parcel of meadow in the Great Meadow, No. 4; one parcel of meadow upon the island, No. I (no valuation). Sworn to by Garret Hansen.

Issue :

No trace.

From Bergen's Early Settlers:

Aug. 3, 1639. Gov. Kieft granted 100 morgens of land on the west end of L. I., lying within the present bounds of N. U. and Gravesend to Anthony Jansen, a Turk. The patent was dated May 27, 1643.

Feb. 9, 1660. Anthony sold his patent to Nicholas Stillwell. up to this time the property was called the " Turk's plantation."

Feb. 28, 1664. Nicholas sold the patent to François de Bruynne, after whom it was called "Bruynnsburg."

June 4, 1665. Francois sold a part to Jan Janse Ver Ryne.

Dec. 10, 1678, he sold the remainder to Barent Joosten and Jan Hansen of Bushwick.

On page 55, Bergen says:

"Jan Hansen, Bruyenburgh, emigrated in 1639 and took the oath of allegiance in Bushwick in 1687. Probably this is Jan Hansen (Van Noortstrand), an owner of Buyennesberg, hence the name."

By the compiler :

This Jan Hansen is claimed by Bergen to have been a son of Hans Jansen from Noordstrant. This Jan Hansen sold his } of the N. U. purchase, June 1, 1696. The oldest son of Hans Jan- sen (Jan Hansen) was dead Dec.313, 1692, as per the affidavit of his half-brother, Garret Hansen.

Jan Hansen of Bushwick and Bruynnsburg would seem to have not been a Noordstrand at all, but rather a son of Hans Hansen Bergen of Bushwick (see Tunis Guysbert Bogaert).

JAN HANSEN, youngest son of Hans Jansen and Janneken Gerrits Van Loon, m. Willemtje Van Boxum. He was the younger brother of Garret and Peter, as mentioned in his father's will. Is said by Bergen to have settled in Hackensack, N. J.

JOHN NOSTRAND, of Hd., son of Frederick and Cornelia Fos- ter, b. 1730; bp. June 27, 1731, at Ja .; witness, - Forster (probably William, Cornelia's father); d. June 23, 1784, a. 54; m. Sarah Flower, d. Sep. 7, 1814, a. 79. 11. 26 (Bible record from Henry L. Nostrand of Ja.). Apl. 8, 1768, he united with his brothers in the deed to Charles Duryea of O. B.

1782. On New Year's night some robbers knocked at the door of John Skidmore, Fosters meadow, and asked for help, pretending their carriage was broken down. He could not call his negro Jack, for he was out, "keeping New Year's."

John Nostrand, passing by at the time in his sleigh, noticed a man in the door, supposed to be one John Place, a shoemaker, who having seen some papers at Skidmore's the day before, thought they must be deeds for the place that Skidmore was about selling, and that he must have the purchase money by him. But he had not.

They, however, carried off $40 in cash, some clothing, and all his linen, so that none was left for a winding sheet that was soon after needed. The things were hid in Clement's barn. Skid- more used to keep his money hid under the tow of the nest of a setting hen over which a basket was turned. Three broods were hatched while the money was thus concealed under her. The robbers crippled the old couple badly. They cut the man and bruised the wife, thinking she would tell where the money was.

Their granddaughter Phebe, aged eleven, crawled under the bed, behind a candle box. They hauled out the box, but did not discover her.

A child through fright, crept between the feather beds.
