Piper Family of Herkimer )
(By Nora A. Piper Wood,) 6th generation. Herkimer, N. Y.
Among the Palatine emigrants to America was Andrew Piper who be- came one of the 27 patentees of Stone Arabia Patent owning Lot. 31, which he sold to Hendrick Walrath June 26, 1724. He was known to have had two sons, one of whom was Johann Peter Piper.
Johann Peter Piper
Johann Peter Piper lived in the German Flats district and was one of the original patentees with Coen- radt Frank, Frederick Frank, George Herkimer and Michael Stigh in Sta- ley's 3rd tract (or Conrad Frank's Patent.) He was a sergeant under Captain Conrad Frank in 1767 in the colonial service. He was owner of pew No. 61 in the stone church at Fort Herkimer. His will dated June 20, 1786 was filed in Albany. His wife's name was Maria Catherine. Johann Peter Piper's oldest son was Andrew P. Piper (3), born Jan. 6, 1760. In the Revolution in 1776 under Capt. Henry Harter. MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS
As long as the Hon. Dr. Kimm has moved his pen and ink Into the town of Ohio, I hope he won't be of- fended if I write a few lines. I will probably make many mistakes, as I have been away from there for sixty years, and I am asking the readers to correct these and help me out. I was born on the Hurricane in the town of Norway, near the border line of Ohio and I have seen many changes in this section In the last 70 years.
The territory of the town of Ohio was taken from the town of Nor- way in 1823 and called West Bruns- wick and changed to Ohio in 1836. Just why it was called West Bruns- wick is as much of a mystery as naming a small hamlet in the north- ern part Ohio city. There is a tradi- tion that Mr. Morehouse who had purchased a large tract here, failed to get settlers, so he went down In- to Schoharle county and told some German settlers he would take them to Ohio, and when he got them home he told them that was Ohio. This is part of the Jerseyfleld Patent giv- en to Henry Glen and Alexander El- las and 92 others for 94,000 acres of land In 1770. It was also known as the Glen Patent, .
(Until some time in the 1760s the big land owners traded a jug of rum with the Indians for thousands of acres 'of' their lands so the Colony passed a law that no one could get more than 1000 acres at one time.) Old Settlers in the Town of Ohlo

Dear Editor:
First, let me thank the many sub- scribers to the Enterprise and News for all the help they have given me. Rev. Dailey's article on local history was extremely interesting as that is- something I have been doing for; a number of years.
As Towner County , N. Dak. was first settled In 1882, a good many of the pioneers are still living and have a wealth of information. I borrow the church record books, copy them, Index them and then write brief sketches of the families, using those records. As n ievery family, there are some missing records, I contact some member who can supply them. I have never had anyone refuse to help me, yet. In every case, I try to go back as far in their ancestry as possible and also tell of relation- ships in the community. When the book is as complete as I can make it, I pass it around among the families of the congregation and more re- cords are added.
Besides this, I get some organiza- tion, such as the Camp Fire Girls, Ladles' Ald, interested in a history of the town. Each person Is assign- ed some subject, such as the hotels, stores, etc. In most cases the old people of the town are consulted and a fine collection of stories is se- cured. The old newspaper files are also searched for clues to stories. Many stories can now be told, that the papers could not print in their entirety at hat early date and It Is he old people who supply the details.
