BEEKMAN, WALDRON, SLINGERLAND

Who were the parents of Elizabeth Beekman who Jan. 19, 1720 married Willem Waldron (he born 1700.) Is she the daughter of Martin Hen- drickse Beekman and Susanna Jans or of their son Martin Beekman and Neeltje Slingerland (married Sept. 20, 1692.) Among he childtren of Willem Waldron and Elizabeth Beek- man are Pieter born 1720 (named for Willem's father; Neeltje born 1721, Tryntje born 1722, named for Wil- lem's mother,) Martin, Susanna, Cor- nelia. I should appreciate the names of the children of Martin Beekman and Neeltje Slingerland,

BLY FAMILY

In the matter of the Bly family of Ohio, June 17th issue.

Benjamin and Joanna Bly were my great grandparents. Most of their children moved to Norway, N. Y. at different times between 1792 and 1810. The scarcity of the records of the family in Rhode Island shows them to have been on the move from North Kingston to Exeter, R. I., to West Greenwich and Coventry. Then they moved to Voluntown in Con- necticut and presumably some to

Stonington, Conn. Before going to Salisbury and Norway in Herkimer county, N. Y.

It has been difficult to find any- thing about Allen Bly, my ancestor and Job Bly an older brother of Al- len after they came to Herkimer county. Neither the Bull Hill family nor the Nichols ladies at Norway vil- lage have been able to find anything definite in exact data, There are no church nor cemetery records or county clerk's files of either Allen or Job Bly in Herkimer or Montgomery counties.

The record of Phebe Bly born in 1798 as daughter of Allen Bly is not yet found in Rhode Island or Connect- icut. She married Horace son of Maze and Abigail (Spencer) Nichols in 1818, lived at Dairy Hill, Norway" and is buried as wife of Horace Nch- ols in the Nichols-Sweet graveyard at Dary Hill. Tradition a :... s 51 ... ' that she was resour ::::: ) _: = 16;y family emergencies an: greatly

loved. She was not know= . c Navr had any brother or sister and it Is thought that her mother died before she and Allen came to Norway. It was supposed that she and her father may have been living in the family of Maze Nichols when she was mar- ried to Horace, the son of Maze Nich- ols.

It seems that Allen Bly was born in 1775 or '78 as the seventh or eighth child of Benjamin and Joanna and he and Mary were their last children. Mary Bly was born Oct. 6, 1776 and Allen may have been a twin with her as their names were listed sometimes Mary and Allen and again Allen and Mary. But if not a twin Allen was likely born in 1774 or 5 or 1777 or 8.

The sixth child of Benjamin and Joanna was a son unnamed, born in 1774 or later. He may have been a

his mind was queer he spoke on the snow and even called himself "Mr. Barrington." In Oswego county he was associated with Martin Anderson in the hotel business. Anderson was called a relative but certainly not on the Bly side. There was also an Al- Esther was called the daughter of Isaac Brown but which Isaac is not known.

It is know that some of the Bly family was in Norway by 1792 but it is presumed that ' Allen with his daughter Phebe came to Norway not many years before 1810 and with Job Bly with his second wife Esther. They had lived for some time in Washington county, N. Y. and may be in Rensselaer county. It is cer- tain that both Allen and Job had some connection with a settlement in St. Lawrence county during the war of 1812. Possibly this was only a lumber project for & war effort. Al- len and Job both had two interests in common: Excellent tree choppers and lovers of good horses. Some one of the wives of the St. Lawrence county died there. It is supposed to have been Allen Bly's wife because Job's wife Esther was living in Nor- way in 1852 when Job died and she moved later to Cortland county where It is supposed she had died without child by Job Bly.

There was a Barrington who used to visit in Norway before the Civil War. Where he came from or where he went we do not know. If he was a son of this Esther Bly by her first husband we do not know. Mary Pot- ter (which ?) living in Civil War days len Sylvester who bought one of these hotels of Martin Anderson. The later dates would make it possible for Al- len Sylvester to be a grandson of Martin Anderson.

It has been much easier to trace the' ancestry of Joanna the wife of Benjamin Bly, though there are some catches there. When Benjamin Bly died in 1818 he was over 80 years of age. This places his birth much ear- lier than had been supposed. The fact that their children were born in the 1760s and 1770s caused searchers to discard Joanna born before :740. But Benjamin Bly wawcertsif: 39 early as 1737. Joanna Ca : A WIG Greenwich, P .. I. was bor: and was marr.cc possibly Saybrook to E. Bay.

were probably not married until 1. which would make them about 24 years old, rather old for those times. Joanna was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Corey) Carr. There was some kind of a mistake in copy- ing the date of Joanna's birth. It was written May 24, 1733 which was in the same month as the birth of her older brother William born May 16, 1733. The second child of William and Elizabeth Carr was Caleb born July 7, 1734. The fourth, Elizabeth was born August 24, 1738. Joanna listed as their third child born May 24 has the likely preference for 1736 or may be 1737 and probably the same year as Benjamin. Bly.

iage have been abie to find anything definite in exact data. There are no church nor cemetery records or county cierk's files of either Aiien or Job Bly in Herkimer or Montgomery counties.

The record of Phebe Bly born in 1798 as daughter of Alien Biy is not yet found in Rhode 1siand or Connect- icut. She married Horace son of Maze and Abigail (Spencer) Nichols in 1818, lived at Dairy Hiii, Norway and is buried as wife of Horace Nch- ols in the Nichois-Sweet graveyard at Dary Hili. In that event Al- ien could not have been born earlier than 1774 for this unnamed son was aged under 16 in 1790 and is credited as older than Mary. He probably died as a child.

The fifth child of Benjamin and Jo- anna was Benjamin Jr. born in the 1770s, possibly 1771. He lived in Voluntown, Conn. and there is no re- cord of his marriage or leaving for New York state.

The first four children of Benjamin and Joanna were born in the 1760s in this order: Joseph, William, Eu- nice and Job. Job was born in 1768 or 9 and died Juiy 27, 1852 in the town of Norway. From the Hartford Times we learn that he married first April 8, 1790 at Voiuntown, Conn. to Oiive Rathbun of West Greenwich, R. I. only a few miles away. They may have been members of that same Ekonk Church. They had one child Job, Jr., born in 1791 who lived in - Rhode Island and was married in 1811 at Exeter, R. 1. to Freeiove Wat- son. Then Olive died and Job Biy, Sr. married second the widow Esther Barrington of Stonington, Conn. about 1802 and. to New York State "with others of the family." This Es- ther Barrington had some supposed relationship to the wife of Aiien Biy. knew him. We iocate no Barrington family in Stonington, Conn.

There is no evidence extant as to who was the mother of Phebe Biy. Before her father Allen left Nor- way for Oswego county, his mind was supposed to have gone queer. He lived then eitber with Horace Nichols his son-in-law or with Job Biy. Wher.

Here we run into two danger sig-, nais In Rhode Island ancestry, the temptation to claim descent from Governors when you are not; the other to adopt gentry of the same name in England when there are plen- ty of middle ciass people that were just as good. 1 had aiready found that this William Carr born 1708 was the son of Caleb and Joanna (Slo- cum) Carr. This Caleb Carr born 1679 was not Governor Caleb Carr but the son of yet another Caleb Carr who had married Phyllis Greene and died on Connecticut Isiand in 1690. This Caleb Carr probably born in the 1630s in London was the son of Rob- ert Carr born in 1614 in London. Rob- ert and his brother Caleb Carr born in 1616 came to Rhode 1siand in its earliest founding. 1t was this Caleb Carr who became Governor of Rhode 1siand. Their parents were Benjamin and Martha (Hardington) Carr of London.

The ancestry of Phyllis Greene has been cieariy brought out in many ar- ticies and books. She was the daugh- ter of John and Anna (Almy) Greene. John Greene born 1620 was son of John and Joan (Tattersall) Greene.

This John Greene born 1597 was son of Richard and Mary (Hooker) Greene. Richard Greene was son of a Richard Greene who died in 1608; and this older Richard was son of a Robert Greene who was living in 1543 to 1558. Proof of his ancestry is still open. The connection claimed back to Sir Henry Grcene is possible but sureiy not proven.

WART, WALRADT, HELMER

Adam Wart, born in 1783, was a captain In 138 New York Regulars, War of 1812. Our earliest informa- tion shows that he was living in Clay, N. Y. in 1836 and he died and was buried near there in 1859. His wife was Catherine Walradt, birth date unknown, death date 1852. Their children were: Catherine Wart, born 1829, married Hiram Fcx, died 191-0; William Wart born April 10, 1818 at Canajoharie, N. Y. died July 12, 1901 at Newell, lowa; Mary Ann Wart, birth date not known, married H. Amenzo Dygert, died and buried in : Phoenix, N. Y .; Warner Wart (dates not known) who went west in the Gold Rush.

In Adam Wart's Bible the follow- ing names appear: Morris Wart, died October 13, 1815 born about 1761; Adalphes (I. or J.) Walradt died July 30, 1814 (born about 1750.) I believe it likely that these were the male parents of Adam Wart and of Cath- erine Walradt and hope that some one can identify the line for m.e Fam- ily word-of-mouth records claim Adolph Walradt and Catherine Hel- mer as parents of Catherine Walradt.
