AVERY

I would like information about the ancestors and descendants of the fol- Na- flowing who were all children of Ben- jamin Avery and of his first wife Peggy Raymer:

Eliza Jane Avery born Jan. 14, 1814.

Harriet Emmeline Avery born March 25, 1818.

Jesse R. Avery born Oct. 15, 1820. James Raymer Avery born Aug. 13, 1823, married Sarah M. Fowler at Troy, N. Y. on October 6, 1844.

Angeline J. Avery born Sept. 11, 1826.

William C. Avery born July 1,

Marquis D(e) L(a) F(ayette) Avery born June 16, 1832.

I have all the information on Jesse and James and their descendants. The others remain a mystery, except for the fact that either William or Marquis married Fanny Sheldon and had a son Frederick who died in his teens. Father Benjamin is supposed to have remarried around 1833 and to have removed "to the west." Jas. R. Avery was born in Dutchess coun- ty, though all spent most of thelr lives in the Mohawk Valley.

(neminer), Juna (Lewis), Polly (Ja- cobl), Olive (House), and Hannah Maria. Some few of the birth dates as were found in the Nassau, New York Reformed church records are: Phebe born 3-9-1809; David born 3- 29-1812; Enos born 9-14-1814; and Hannah Maria born 2-17-1817 bapt. 2-29-1818. Family records of Hannah give the year of birth as 1819.

Hannah M. died in Turin, N. Y., September 25th, 1906; Hannah M. Mickel married 9-21-1841 in Lewis county Stephen Parsons Allen. They had 6 children: Elizabeth (Clobridge) born 1844; Mary Ann (Everett) born 1847; Lucina (Jones) born 1849; James Monroe born 1851; George W. born 1853 and Abigall Cynthia born Jan. 2, 1857 who married Jan. 28, 1879 Griffith Prichard Jones, born

vuuren in N. Y., page 117, Vol. 25 N. Y. Gen'l and Hist. there is baptismal records from the Reformed church in the city of N. Y. of Johannes Mikkel and Anna Marla Kogh, kinders (child) Willem Feb. 22, 1747. In no way do I know that this Johannes and Anna Maria are of any kin to Hannah Maria, daughter of Andrew but the names bear a similarity. Glenn L. Mickel of Hector, N. Y. has been as faithful In his search for the parentage of Andrew as I, and we both would be most grateful for any assistance that could. be given us Names, dates, places and occupation or Revolutionary War service are es -! pecially desired.

BELLINGER

In reading over the Bellinger gen- ealogy I see where :a mistake was made. I am giving the correction and as much further as I know.

It gave the children of James M. Bellinger and Anna Jackson as four daughters. The eldest was son Clar- ence. He grew up, married, had two sons.

Next was daughter Alice. She mar- ried William Lambert, lived in Nut- ley, N. J., had one daughter Elenor. Daughter married Arthur Manchie and.has 3 daughters living in Nutley, N. J.

Next was a daughter Mary Eila, as late as December last was not mar- ried and living in Nutley, N. J.

Next a son Lewis went west, mar- ried, had a daughter an a son.

The :above mentioned Clarence and William and Alice Bellinger Lambert are dead but I cannot give any dates.

MEAD OR MEADE

Cynthia Mead or Meade, daughter of Enos married Andrew Mickel (see Mickel query.) According to .records of the Reformed Church, Nassau, N. Y. Cynthia Mickel, adult, became a member of the church in 1809. The same records give the birth dates of four of the Mickel children as was listed in the Mickel query. Robert R. Phillips of Nassau, N. Y. has gen- erously given the Mead information contained in this genealogy. Enos! Mead mentions in his will, son Heze- kiah, son James, son Enos, son Ezra, W. and son Anson. son George Daughters Zaida Brown, Cynthia Mickel, Phebe Williams, Sarah Boyce, Asenath Turner. Mr. Phillips seems certain that the father of Enos was Jonathan Mead but did not give his authority. Perhaps it was the record found on the few pages (all that is left) of an old Mead Bible record as follows, in part is Jonathan Mead died 3-19-1793; Sarah Mead died 3- · 29-1812; Enos Mead died 12-21-1829, aged 65 years 5 mo. 21 days; Martha Mead died 7-28-1838 aged 69 years 11 days; James Mead died 1853 age 47, etc. From this Bible record I do not know whether to draw conclusions

CLINE

Johannes Cline settled on Schohar -. ie creek, now the town of Flor- ida, Montgomery Co., N. Y. probably prior to 1758. When? Reputed to have been from Holland. Was he? And when did he arrive these shores ? What was the name of his wife? Married here or in Holland or else-) where ?

A John and Nellie are supposed too

been brother and sister, perhaps nephew and niece.)

Through the kindness of the pub- lishers of the Enterprise and News I have heretofore mentioned the above noted Elizabeth more fully and par- ticularly. How fortunate we, who have the historic concept of things are that we have such a medium for the exchange of desired information. Is it not to our great interest to pass the word of this paper along to such of our correspondents as we have

with through other sources ? I am so doing. Wili not you?

QUERIES

In your issue of 15 April, 1943 is & letter from N. A. R. of Utica assert- ing a mistake was made in the child- ren of some one named James M. Bel- linger who lives in Wisconsin, That is, the James M. B .- I found lives .in Wisconsin. It is useless to hunt up the James M. B. referred to, unless N. A. R. will give the number in the numbering system, to be followed, . both ways.

N. A. R. mentions Nutley, N. J. I wrote to the family there 4 to 6 times in a period of 10 years or.sq and I was never favored with a reply-SO. The information given me my some member of the family was incom -. plete in the later generations.

I am curious to know the number- of James M. Bellinger. I left off many gencrations, because, from. those given, near relatives could fig- ure out their own line of descent, us -.! ing the data to join our patriotic or- ders. In fact, I left out my own 51 children and 6 grandchildren, and one son is a Major, the other is a Lt. Commander. Both are working hard.

Answer to Fox inquiry in your is- sue of 15 April 1943.

Mrs. L. P. Fox of Syracuse fails to state WHERE the ancestors, Henry Fox and Elizabeth lived and died .. . She refers to Stophel (Christopher). Fox, not Stopher as printed. A defi -- nite answer to her question is given in the Ehle Book, page 22, which she can buy at your quoted price in the. Enterprise and News.

If Mrs. L. P. Fox will ignore the typographical errors in the Ehle. Book such as having twins born two ... years apart; and dates as 7 instead: of 17 also if she will solve the num- bering system of the Ehle Book, she- can extend her Ehle line backward a: couple of generations.

The Fox line can be extended back- ward by Col. Ola -W. Bell of San-An- tonio, Texas. Whether Capt. William Fox, Jr. of Revolutionary war service is the same man as the justice of the peace of Palatine is a matter of his- tory for Mrs. L. P. Fox to follow up- in New York State, rather than for residents of Texas and Georgia to .: struggle with.

Please note that your issue of 15 April has an inquiry from another Ehle descendant given on pages 21 and 22 of the Ehle Book, viz. John C. Ehle. The inquiry was from E. D .. . Selmser, Box 385, Freeport, Texas .-. L. F. Bellinger.

MEAD OR MEADE

Cynthia Mead or Meade, daughter of Enos married Andrew Mickel (see Mickel query.) According to records of the Reformed Church, Nassau, N. Y. Cynthia Mickei, aduit, became a member of the church in 1809. The same records give the birth dates of four of the Mickei children as was listed in the Mickei query. Robert R. Phillips of Nassau, N. Y. has gen- erously given the Mead information contained in this genealogy. Enos Mead mentions in his will, son Heze- kiah, son James, son Enos, son Ezra,

Anson. son George W. and son Daughters Zaida Brown, Cynthia Mickel, Phebe Williams, Sarah Boyce, Asenath Turner. Mr. Phillips seems certain that the father of Enos was Jonathan Mead but did not give his authority. Perhaps it was the record found on the few pages (all that Is left) of an old Mead Bible record as follows, in part is Jonathan Mead died 3-19-1793; Sarah Mead died 3- 29-1812; Enos Mead died 12-21-1829, aged 65 years 5 mo. 21 days; Martha Mead died 7-28-1838 aged 69 years 11 days; James Mead died 1853 age 47, etc. From this Bible record I do not know whether to draw conclusions that Sarah Mead was the wife of Jonathan and perhaps Martha the wife of Enos. The Mead genealogy I have seen does not seem to be too exacting so I have not relied too greatly upon it.

In the New York Genealogical and Blographical Records, Voi. 34, page 182 West Philippi or Old Gilead Church, under a Register of Marriag- es in the West Society of Philips Pat- ent under Rev. Ebenezer Knibioe and date of Feb. 2 A. D. 1758 is found, "Jonathan Meads was married in the evening with Sarah Meade." It Is to be inferred that Meade, might have been Sarah's malden name.' 'Again this Mead genealogy refers to in the History of Greenwich, N. Y., I see that Jonathan Mead married Sarah Guernsey. If this Jonathan who married Sarah G. was the father of Enos grandfather of Cynthia was his mother Sarah Huested?

Perhaps some of the many de- scendants of these goodly people can enlighten me on' this Mead ancestry, if so I shall be eternally grateful.

PETTINGILL, PETTINGELL

In the Question and Answer column of this papsr of Feb. 18, 1943 the un- dersigned queried with reference to Dr. (Capt.) Samuel Pettingill of Florida, Montgomery county, N. Y.

From six answers received, one from Connecticut, three from New York, one from Florida and one from the Canal Zone, the following is de- veloped:

That he may have coms to Florida from Albany, N. Y.

That a Jacob Pettingill was mus- tered June 4, 1755 at Albany, serving in Capt. Edmond Matthews Co., N. Y. (Province) Troops.

That Jacob was again mustered, Lake Georgs Oct. 1, 1755, serving to Nov. 1, 1755.

Dr. Samuel Pettingell married (probably) by 1757, named a son Ja- cob (he that married Christina Snook.)

Is there significance to this?

Was Jacob of the Provincial Troops a brother of Dr. Samuel or may he have been father ?

-. It has been said that the Creator works in a mysterious way His won- ders to perform.

Can you, gentle reader, not be an answerist to this question and per- form an historical (though earthiy) wonder ?

FOX

In reference to the request of Mrs. L. P. Fox, 2710 E. Genesee St., Syr acuse, which appeared in the edition of April 15, 1943, in which hope was expressed that some one could con- nect Henry Fox, born March 20, 1786 and who died June 7, 1863, married Feb 17, 1804, Elizabeth Ehle, with the Mohawk Valley Foxes, I hereby give the information desired:

The above Henry Fox was a son of William W. Fox born Sept 21, 1753, d March 20, 1836, married Anna Eva Loucks, b Feb 13, 1756.

· William W. Fox and wife Anna Eva Loucks or Laux, had 4 children: William W. Jr., b Jan 10, 1781, d June 22, 1783, m Susanna Richter.

Nancy, b Jan 4, 1778, m Conrad Near.

Henry, b Mar 20, 1786, m Elizabeth Ehle.

Katharine, b Mar 14, 1788, d Oct. 25, 1858, m Peter Nellis.

The will of Willam W. Fox was ex- ecuted in 1819 and probated Oct. 23, i 1837. It mentions no wife and three children only, viz: William, Nancy & * Catherine. No mention in the docu- ment of son Henry, but such omiss- ions were common and usually indi- cated that the children omitted had already been given their share.

I have no documentary evidence that William Fox and wife Anna Eva had a son Henry but I was told many years ago that such was the case by two of the grandsons of William Fox and these two grandsons were ths sons of Henry Fox.

In 1909 I called on two elderly men named Fox who lived in the town of Phoenix, they were brothers, Henry and Josiah Fox, b Dec 20, 1812 and Oct. 16, 1813, respectively. They as- sured me that the were the sons of Henry Fox (1786-1863) and his wife Elizabeth Ehle. They further assured me that their father was a son of William W. Fox (1753-1836) and Eva Laux. They named the three children of William W. Fox who were ment- ioned in the latter's will as Uncle and Aunts.

William W. Fox (1753-1836) was a son of Captain William Fox and Ca- therina Zimmer, and a great grand- son of Johan William Fox, (Stone A- rabia Patentee) and Margaret Kast, and also a brother of Christopher W. Fox (1757-1835) who m Margaret Nellis.

ANNEKE JANSE WEBER

I would like to know how Anneke Janse Weber who married Andries De Graff was related to the famous Anneks Weber Janse, who married first. Rollof Jansen and 2nd Rev. Ev- erhadus Bogardus.

Anneke Jans Weber married And- ries De Graff in Hollond and they came to New Amsterdam in Ds Graff's own ship the "claas Aaron" in 1624 or 1625. She was a doughter of Wolfert Weber I am told and also a great granddaughter of King Wil- iam Fourth of Holland.

Perhaps Mr. Ben Dixon of Wash- ington can give me this information. Mr .. Dixon sent me some Weber-Bo- gardus data some years ago. At that time I did not know about my De Graff-Weber ancestry.

HULBURT, HANCHETT ,

Philip Hulburt married Deborah Hanchett in Suffleld, Conn., Jan. 1, 1794. He is said to have removed to Montgomery county before or shortly after 1800. Some years later he sold two pieces of land in Broadalbin, but how or when he acquired them I do not know. He lived some years at Bridgewater, but as nearly as I can tell did not own land in Oneida Co. Anxious to know exact dates and places, church membership and so forth.

His eldestdaughter, Mary, married Shaler Fyler. Anxious to know when and where married, where lived and when, where children (Sheldon Hul- burt, Roman, and Mary) were born, where lived, whom married and when, also their children.

Is it possible that William Hulburt Who may bave been Phillip's father, came at the same time or earlier, to what is now Montgomery county.
