The land Is described as April 15, 1794. including all the flats and islands between the Louis Creek and the Evas Kill being about one mile and extending as far north as he chose. Karl Hansen Toll bought this land in 1699 from Hendrick Kyler for the name amount of 180 pounds. Hen- drick Kyler acquired the same from' Claas Andriese De Graff who died in 1697. DeGraff purchased the land from the Mohawk Indians. The In- dian name for the place was "Ad- riucha" meaning "Valiant." It has al- so been known as Hillegas and Claas Grovens Hock. The name Cranes Vil- lage or Cranesville as we know it,
ville, first settled by the Groot fam- ily, is in the oldest settlement in the township of Amsterdam in Mont- gomery county.
In the winter of 1716 Philip Groot set out from Schenectady to go to his new hme. While crossing the Mo- hawk river the horses and sleigh broke through the ice and Philip and a woman companion were drowned The widow Groot and her children, together with some far m servants founded the settlement at Cranes- ville the following year.
In 1730 the Groot brothers, Simon, Jacob and Lewis built a grist mill on the Lewis Creek at the foot of Swart Hill where the Lewis Creek now flows into the Mohawk river. This mill was the first. to be erected on the north side of the Mohawk and from it flour was sold to the settlers along the river for many years. The big over-shot wheel that ran the mill was not turned by the water of the creck where it stood, but by the flow of a copious spring in the ravine of the creek just above the mill. There was a small Algonkian village at the top of the hill above the mill and its corn pits can still be seen.
Lewis Groot married Annatie Van Antwerpen Dec. 6, 1738 and had the following children: Philip born Oct. |18, 1739 and died Nov. 17, 1769; En- geltie born May 27, 1741 and died May 2, 1759; Petrus (Peter) born March 7, 1744 fought at Oriskany in 1777 and Simon born Dec. 20? and died Dec. 17, 1749.
