Visscherto Peter Bousman and by Peter Bousman to Stephen Ireland and the land and premises of therein described in the Town Malta; recorded 12 April 1828. All 4 of the above deeds were signed by Mary Cosman Ireland by mark, writ- ten around which the counselor wrote for the 1st and 3rd Mary Ireland for the 2d Polly Ireland and for the 4th Mary Crouch, Crouch being a name she never had. It has been a stumb- ling block to researchers but in the light of the references here given may In the opinion of the writer be dismissed. If she could read, she might have mistaken Crouch for Cosman. If Crouch was added after she signed by mark, she had no chance to detect the error. Signing by mark was very common among frontier . families, especially among those like her whose age compelled their schooling before the Revolution. The records show a higher proportion' of mark signatures for wives than husbands, particularly among those accustomed to languages other than English. Read Newburgh school his-, tory before 1775.
