BUTTE COUNTY.

ORGANIZED in 1850. Bounded on the northwest by Tehama; northeast by Plumas; southeast by Yuba; south by Sutter; and on the west by Colusa. Mountain and valley form the chief topographical features of Butte County. It contains 1,458 square miles, and is rich in mineral wealth. In early days its gulches and flats were among the most productive in the State, and, when exhausted, the hydraulic pipe was brought into requisition to wash the immense gravel beds that were discovered in the hills, the sediment, probably, of ancient rivers.

The only hydraulic mining now carried on is at the town of Cherokee, twelve miles north of Oroville.

The valley land is fertile; all the cereals thrive; and the land is being thoroughly cultivated by experienced farmers with the most improved machinery.

There are several large tracts of land controlled by a few par- ties, but these are either divided up and leased or are being sold in smaller tracts.

Lumbering is carried on to a large extent, the pine forests of the higher altitudes forming an almost inexhaustible supply of first-class lumber.

Flumes are used for transporting the lumber from the saw- mills to the towns-one of them, emptying at Chico, being thirty- five miles long; another, ending at a point seventeen miles south of Oroville, is forty miles in length. River and railroad afford ample transportation facilities. The Oregon Division of the Cen- tral Pacific Railroad runs through the county from south to north. The California Northern connects Marysville, in Yuba County, with Oroville, the county seat of Butte County. This road is to be extended into Plumas County, the survey having already been made.

Although this county produces from its rich soil in the valleys an abundant harvest of wheat, the foot-hills are gradually being devoted to the cultivation of the grape and the larger fruits, varieties of which are pronounced equal to the production of other fruit-growing counties of the State. Good schools and many churches are well supported. The school buildings are of a superior character.

Is situated on the line of the Or- egon Division of the Central Pacific Railroad, distant twelve miles southeast of Oroville and twenty-one miles northwest of Marysville. It contains a popu- lation of 700 people, and derives its name from Major Biggs, one! of the early settlers. The coun -! try surrounding is noted for its farming products, upon which the town is chiefly dependent. The evidences of prosperity are abundant on all sides, and the numerous local enterprises are proofs of the wisdom of the inhabitants and their confidence in its future. Large warehouses, for the storage of grain, have been recently erected, and the railroad company has made ex- tensive improvements in its offices and freight rooms. Mr. I. L. McDaniels, an enterprising citizen, is the proprietor of bar- ley-mills and water-works con- nected therewith, which latter supply the town with an Baylis Aaron, farmer

A large amount of attention is being paid to the manufactur- ing interest, and first-class works of all kinds are springing up all over the county.

The character of the farm dwellings is improving decidedly, and the air of comfort surrounding them is suggestive of the old homes east of the Rockies. The towns are growing in a healthy manner. The people are intelligent, enterprising, and hospitable. The climate is healthful, and everything is conducive to prosper- ity and happiness.
