Chico.

Chico, the largest town of out work of the best quality, Butte County, situated on the competing successfully with any division of Central Pacific and establishment on the coast. The Sierra Lumber Company does an immense business at this place, one of their flumes terminating here. They carry a large stock of all sizes of building lumber, and are the largest producers of sugar pine on the coast. Their mills, 35 miles away, are con- nected with Chico by telephone, which enables them to fill orders for odd sizes promptly. Upon one occasion a special order was received in the morning, the trees felled, the logs taken to the mill and sawed, and the lumber flumed and delivered at Chico the - same day. Their yard- in the southeast part of town is connected with the Central Pa- cific by a branch track. The Union Hotel, conducted by Messrs. Allen & Werstbaugher, gentlemen every way competent to run a first-class house, is not surpassed by any on the coast in room, accommodation, or table. Mr. Charles Olinger, the clerk, Oregon Railroad, about 90 miles distant from Sacramento, has a population of about 6,000, and is a thriving town. Beautifully located, it is the garden spot of Butte, surrounded by immense farms and timber lands. It has five churches, two fine brick school houses, several private schools, and three large public halls. The societies are, viz .: Lodges-Masonic, Odd Fellows, Red Men, Temperance, Order of A. O. U. W., Knights of Honor, and several others, and all in a prosperous condition; has excel- lent water and gas works, sev- eral fire hose companies. There are two banks-the Bank of Butte County, and Bank of Chico-and business houses of all descriptions. The town was in- corporated about eleven years ago. It has a city government. The surrounding county is well settled. Chico has three daily and three weekly newspapers. They are ably conducted and looks carefully after the comfort have a fine circulation. The of guests.
