It is the county seat and has a municipal form of govern- ment under a charter of incor- poration. Its topography is de- sirable for the extension of its limits, being on a natural es- planade on the west bank of the Sacramento River, at the head of navigation, and on the Oregon Division of the Central Pacific Railroad, 135 miles from Sacra- mento, the State capital. Its natural advantages for a per- manent and steady growth are of such a nature and so multi- farious as to warrant the belief that the place will become a city of considerable importance in a period not very remote. It is surrounded by a very rich body of agricultural land, and the opportunities for developing the stock-raising, horticultural, and cereal-producing interests are manifold. These facts are being taken advantage of yearly by persons who engage in the pursuits of the husbandman. New lands are being opened up, and an increase in the acreage sown to grain and otherwise cultivated is annually being made. Everything indigenous to the latitude grows luxuriantly, and large crops are yearly har- vested. It is mainly to the agricultural interests that the rapid growth of the place is due, though lumber of splendid quality is manufactured in large quantities. It would be an ex-
