The town is situated on the Oregon Division of the Central Pacific Railroad, seventy miles north of Sacramento, fifteen miles west of Oroville, twenty- six miles south of Chico, two and a half miles from Feather River, and twenty miles east of the Sacramento River; has a population of 700. Agriculture is its chief source of support, be- ing surrounded by rich arable land of three different qualities, to wit: River bottom, where failure of crops is unknown; timber land, which has a fine sandy soil peculiarly adapted for wheat, the wood paying the ex- pense of cleaning; and the adobe land west of town, which is a fine grain-producing soil, now being drained and cultivated in such a manner that a good crop every year is almost certain. The town is beautifully located in the center of a grove of live oak timber, where there is sandy soil, making it fr e from mud during winter. There are three churches: Catholic, Methodist, and United Brethren. The va- rious fraternal societies are rep- resented and are in a prosperous condition. The Herald, with Mr. C. N. Reed in the edito- rial chair, looks well after the interests of the town and coun- try, and has the appearance of prosperity.
The Grangers' Bank is about to build a large grain warehouse, which, in connection with those already erected by other parties, will give accommodation to a large amount of grain. The
