A station on the California and Oregon Railroad, six miles from Wheatland. (See Marys- ville and Wheatland.)
Smartsville.
An important mining town, eighteen miles east of Marys- ville. It draws its revenue from the most important hydraulic mines in the State. The town has a population of 400 inhabi- tants, maintains two churches, a public school, and Masonic, Odd Fellows, Good Templars, Chosen Friends, and Working men Lodges. It is pleasantly located in the foot-hills, and has many beautiful gardens, with neat and some expensive houses. It is one of the oldest mining camps in Yuba County, and large sums of money have been expended in developing and working the rich mining claims surrounding it. The Masons have a fine hall, in which the different orders hold their meet- ings. Express, telegraph and post-offices are located here. H. WACHHORST, 315 " Street Sacramento CAL. Fine Watches, DIAMONDS, A Specialty.
The resources of the county are numerous, and besides the ag- ricultural and live stock interests, includes a considerable pro- duction of such mineral wealth as quicksilver, copper, sulphur, and petroleum, all of which are found in the Coast Range Mount- ains, which bound the county on the west. It is in wheat grow- ing, however, that this section is pre-eminent, producing the heaviest grain crop in northern California every year. The fa- cilities for transporting this grain are afforded by the Sacra- mento River and Northern Railway. The farms of Colusa are, many of them, of mammoth proportions. These farms are all brought to a high state of cultivation and are immensely remun- erative to their owners. The breeding of improved stock is also a distinguishing feature of the industries pursued, and Colusa has produced some of the finest stock in the State. Every facil- ity for grazing and stock-raising is presented, and the farmers possess the enterprise to take every advantage of these natural resources.
K. WACHHORST,
The population, 17,000, is, of course, mainly composed of farm- ers, and they are, as a class, shrewd business men, who, while advancing their individual interests, do not forget the public wel- fare of the county. The consequence is that colleges and school houses are supported in the most generous manner. The elegance of many of the private residences and their surroundings indicate that cultivated taste and an intention to render their homes per .- manent are the prevailing sentiments of each member of the community. The small farms scattered through the county are all in a thriving condition, and actual poverty is unknown among the people. On every hand the sure indication of prosperity is apparent, and the eve is everywhere delighted by visions of for- tile grain fields surrounding homes where comfort and plenty are continually making glad the hearts of the husbandman and his family.
