Situated on the . Northern Railroad, twenty miles from Co- lusa. Population, about 800. The appearance of the town is commanding as, since the fire, there have added. many substan- tial buildings. It possesses a foundry, machine shop, flouring- mill, soda water factory, a large hotel, beautiful railroad build- ings, and the largest brick busi- ness block in Colusa County. The different secret orders are represented, as well as several religious sects who possess fine church buildings. There is a commodious public school, with competent teachers, and a weekly newspaper, the Willows Journal, widely read in the northern part of the county, where it exerts a great influ- ence. TEHAMA COUNTY.
BOUNDED on the north by Shasta; on the east by Plumas; on the southeast by Butte; on the south by Colusa; and on the east by Mendocino and Trinity Counties. Population, about 7,000. County seat, Red Bluff. At the head of the great valley of the Sacramento, where the Coast Range is wedded to the Sierras, is the county of Tehama. It was organized in 1856, and contains an area of 2,800 square miles, the general character of the surface being broken and hilly. As was the case with all these foot-hill counties, Tehama, in the early days, was famous for its rich placers. These surface diggings, however, could not last, and when they "petered," the people turned their attention to the more established industries of agriculture, grazing, and lumber interests. The county is peculiarly adapted for cattle ranges, possessing, as it does, rich meadow land in abundance, well watered by perennial springs of the best water in the world, and easily accessible from the winter ranges of the lower plains. Hides, beef, wool, and similar staples are exported in large quan- tities, which, with the farm and orchard products and lumber exports, produce a revenue which serves as a foundation for solid prosperity. , A growing industry in this county is that of wine- making, the soil and situation being admirably adapted for this purpose. The wines produced are of the finest quality, and are rapidly attaining a wide celebrity throughout the country. The people are enterprising, and the traveler through this region is forcibly struck by the evidences of permanent prosperity every- where apparent. The principal towns are substantially built, and the predominance of brick and stone structures occupied by the business men, indicate that they possess none of the ephem- eral, mushroom elements of other mountain towns. Even in the smaller villages and hamlets there are no evidences of decay, all of them being surrounded by a population of substantial producers. The educational advantages are first-class, and churches, public halls, and buildings generally are found in every community.
