REPORT OF THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN


REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN FOR THE YEAR 1964


The Selectmen submit the following report on the activities of their department for the year 1964.


The Board organized with the election of Thomas K. McManus, Chair- man, and Mary G. Wilford, Clerk.


In General


In 1964, the Board held 42 meetings and a great many public hearings. The matters that came before the Board are much too numerous to men- tion, but the following are a few of the more prominent subjects which will illustrate the broad scope of the Board's activities.


Further consideration of the discontinuance of passenger service on the New Haven Railroad.


Consideration of the budgets of the various departments.


Planning the reconstruction of Nichols Street.


Consideration of applications for various licenses and permits.


Discussions with Walpole and Westwood relative to Buckmaster Pond.


Consideration of the conversion of the old fire house to a teen-age drop-in center.


Discussions with the Skating Rink Construction Committee.


Hearings relative to liquor violations and dog complaints.


Negotiations with the United States Government regarding widening of Guild Street at the new Post Office addition.


Consideration of the erection of a permanent memorial honor roll.


Discussion of problems incidental to the creation of a Regional Voca- tional School.


Preparation of annual and special town meeting warrants.


Acquisition of additional land for cemetery purposes.


Renovation of the lower floors of the Municipal Building.


Study and amendment of the traffic rules and orders.


Consideration of the Charm report on wages.


Study and solution of the various problems created by the town's growing industries for additional electrical energy.


Discussion of problems arising out of the new Sunday law.


Sewer construction in the southeasterly part of town.


Further consideration of the problem of junk cars on private property.


Consideration of drainage problems at Meadowbrook drain.


Provision for the installation of utilities at the new Eaton Village on Neponset Street.


Various meetings to consider the ever present parking problems.


Supplying additional utilities to new Windsor Gardens construction.


Layout and acceptance of new town streets,

From time to time on application therefor and report thereon, licenses and permits were granted for various activities as permitted by law as follows: namely, common victuallers and transfers of same, Sunday amuse- ments, pool rooms, bowling alleys, junk dealers, public amusements, roller skating rink, lodging houses, intelligence officers, fruit and vegetable stands, sales of frozen desserts, fruit, ice cream, confectionery, exchange of second hand motor vehicles and parts, taxicabs, business and private garages, keeping, storing and sale of volatile inflammable fluid, fuel, oil and other petroleum products, after hearings, Class I, II, and III licenses for purchase and sale of second hand motor parts and vehicles.
