Voted. That to prevent future Inconveniency Arriseing by Abatem' of Rates That no Abatemt of Rates Shall be made by the Assessors after a New choyce of Assessors be made.


In answere to the Petition of Several persons who Suffered Loss at the Late Fire.


Voted. That the Assessors for the year 1711 are Impowered to make Such Abatements of the Town Rates to those who were Sufferers by the Late Fire as they in their discretion Shall See meet.

Voted. That there be a Free Grammar School at the North end of this 'Town.


Voted. That a Comittee be Chosen to Enquire after a Peice of Land at the North Sutable to Sett a School Ilouse on, and to prepare for and Oversee the building therof.


Voted. The Select men be desired to Consider of a proper person for a School master there, and to Treat about Terms.


Voted. That Capt Thomas Hutchinson, Collo Adam Winthrop, m' John Ruck, Capt Edward Martyn and m' Samuell Greenwood or any three of them be the Said Committee relating to the afore said School House.

That the Select men for the year 1711. who are Ap- pointed as A Comittee to Lay ont the fifteen hundred pounds of the Townes Money, being the Produce of the Blue-Hill Lands, in Some Real Estate; be impowered with the Advice of the Seleet- men for the time being, to Vest the Sª 1500"b or any part of it in Some Real Estate without farther Adviseing with the Town.


Voted. An Adjonrnment of this meeting untill two of the Clock this day after noon & Accordingly were then Assembled.


Voted. That the Townes Wharfe, Doek and Flatts at the North Battree, be Appropriated towards the Support of the Free Grammar School at the North end of Boston, And that the im- provement of ye Sª Wharfe, Doek and Flatts be recommended to the Select men and the Committee afore Appointed referring to the Sª School.


[337.] Voted. The Snme of one hundred ninety two pounds eight Shill & Six pence money reed for the Land at Brooklyn Sold to John Winchester and Compa be paid in to and lodged in Mr. Daniel Olivers hand as he is Treasur to the united Committee for the Town and proprietors. And the money be Applyed to the Same use that the five hundred pounds for the Land at Brantree is Appropriated to.


Voted. That the Select men for the time being are impowerd to Lett out the Land weh Lately was John Mathewss in School Street, for a Term of years as they can agree to the advantage of the Town.


Voted. That a Comittee be chosen to Consider of what Shall be needfull to be done for Seeuring the Highway on the Neek and to compute the Charge weh the Same is likely to be, and make report thereof at the next meeting.


Voted. That m" Stephen Minot, m' William Payn merct & Collo John Ballentine be the Sª Comittee for that Servicc.


Agreed That the Consideration of Selling the Small Quit Rents be continued.


Voted. That Sutable places to Lodg powder for the blowing up of Houses be left to the discretion of ye Sel: men to provide.


Voted. That the Veiwers of wood within the Town of Boston be Allowed one peny p'. Cord for So much wood as they Shall Veiw, and the Said peny p Cord to be paid by the buyer.

Voted. That the Sel: men of the Town of Boston be impowered & Ordered, with all Convenient Speed, to make the Draw bridge (So called) a Fast Firm Bridge the width of the Street, And in case Cap® Ballentine or any other person, Sue or bring an Action in the Law, the Select men for the time being are hereby impowercd and Ordered to defend all Such Actions, and that the Charge of makeing the Sª Bridge and Defending it in the Law be defrayed by ve Town.


And that a Committee be Appointed to Examine the Right or pre ention of any perticular person or persons, as to ye Said Bridge, and the just damage that any perticular person or Proprietor may Sustaine by reason of the Said Bridge being made a Fast Bridge, and Report it to the Town, that So due recopence & Satisfaction may be made to Such persons by the Sª Town. Voted. That the Town will Chuse five persons to be of the Sª Committee. Voted. that John Clark Esq", Cap' Thoms Hutchinson, Maj' Thoms Fitch, m' Grove Hirst & Cap' Edwd Martyn be the Sª Committee.


Voted. That m' Watts® proposall abt recovering the Marsh at the bottom of the Common be left to ye Sel men to Consider & make report at je next meeting.


Voted. A grant of three Thousand pounds to be raised on the Inhabitts & Estates in this Town, and to be Applyed to the uses mentioned in the Computation Offered by ye Treasu' & now Read.


Voted. A grant of three hundred pounds to be raised for the Support of the Watch for ye year ensuing.


[33S.] At a meeting of the Free-holders and other Inhabit's of the Town of Boston, duly qualified & warned according to Law, being Convened at the South Meeting-House in Boston the 14th day of May 1712.


Isaac Addington Esq' is chosen ye Moderator for this Meeting.


Voted. That ye Town will proceed to chuse four Representi- tives.


John Clarke Esq", Addington Davenport Esq', Maj" Thom3 Fith and Cap' Thomas Hutchinson are by ye Majority of Voters present at this Meeting Chosen to Serve as the Representitives of This Town according to a warr from the Sheriff of the County of Suffolke.


Whereas the Committee Appointed the 11th of March Last to Consider Ab' Securing the Higway on the neck have now made Report to the Town. That that part of the neck neer the Long Causway they have Computed the Charge, and are of Opinion that the best way to repair and Secure it is by Laying down a Narrow Wharfe on the West'y Side, the whole Length of the Causway which is Thirty-Six Rodd, and haveing by direction of the Select men made an Experim' of the Charge by Laying down abont two Rodd & an halfe, they Compute the whole will Amount to about one hundred and ten pounds.


Voted. an Acceptance of the above Report, and that the Town will Support the Charge of Such a Wharfe to be there inade, in order to Secure the Highway. And that the aforesaid Comittee are Desired to take the Care of Effecting the Same.

enquire after a piece of Land at the North end of this Town Suta- ble to Sett a Seliool House on. Have now Signified to this meet- ing that they have made Dilligent Enquiry in that matter, and have at length pitehed on a peiee of Land belonging to m'6 Susanna Love of abt fifty one foot in breadth & abt one hundred feet in length abutting one end thereof. On Bennet Street, and the other end on Love Street, and that the Same may be purchased for Abt one hundred fifty three pounds, that Land being more then enough for the Setting a School-house on the wch they Recommend to the Town as the most Sutable place weh they Can proeure for that use.


Voted. That the Sd Comittee be impowered to purehaee the afore said pareell of Land, to be paid for out of the Town Treas- ury : And that the Seleet men to gether with the Said Comittee be impowered to Allot So much of ye Sª Land for the Sª School House as they shall judg meet and Convenient.

Addington Davenport Esq', Mesues Isaiah Tay, Daniel Oliver, Thomas Cushing, Oliver Noyes, Joseph Wadsworth and Edward Hutchinson, together with the Select men for the time being, are Impowered to Lett at Intrest the fifteen hundred pounds being the produce of ye Blue-Hill Lands, or any part thereof upon good Security, untill they have Opportunity to Lay out the Same in Some Real Estate.


Voted. That it be Left with the Select men, and they are Impowered to Introduce m' Recompence Wadsworth as a School- master at the North, And to allow him Sixty pounds for one year.


Whereas the Select men have proposed to ye Town to Raise a Comittee to Consider of Some Expedient for the more Effectuall preventing of Poor belonging to Other places, from Obtruding themselves on this Town.


And whereas m' John George hath proposed to ye Consideration of the Town Whether the Alms House ought not to be restored to its Primitive & Pious design, even for ye reliefe of the necessitous, that they might Lead a quiet Peacable & Godly life there, . whereas 'tis now made a Bridewell & House of Correction, weh Obstructs many Honest Poor Peoples going there for the designcd Reliefe & Support, If therefore the Town would Lay out Some moneys. to the building a House of Correction in Some Other place, and re-fitt the Alms House for the Comfortable reception of the distressed it will be a great Act of Charity.


Voted. That the two foregoing proposals be referred to the Consideration of Addington Davenport Esq', Mcsues John George, Oliver Noyes, John Marion, & William Payn, who are appointed as a Comittee to Consider thereof, and to make Report to ye Town of what they Shall think proper to be donc relating there to.

Inhabitts are with all Convenient Speed to provide themselves with Ladders and Tubbs of water as mentioned in the Town order or By-Law otherwise they may expeet to be prosecuted for the penalty of the breach of the sd By Law.


Voted. That the Consideration of what is proper for the Town to do Abt a Light-Hous, be referred to the Seleet men and Com- ittee afore appointed to Improve the fifteen hundred pounds, and to make report to ye Town of what they Shall think advisable threin.


Voted. That the Seleet men be desired to Veiw the House & ground on Fort Hill or Else where, at the Request of ye Gentle- men that are about to Ereet a Charity School, or Hospitall for Poor Children [341.] And that they Lay out what ground may be thought Convenient for the Sª Intention, and make Report at the Next Gen" Town meeting for the Townes confirmation of the Same, to be continued and Appropriated for that use So long as Such School Shall be upheld there.


Voted. That it be Left with the Select men to receive proposalls, and to Treat with persons about Erecting a Dam and Mills next to Dorchester Neek, and to make report to the Town at their next meeting of what they shall think proper relating thereto.

That a Comittee Shall be raised to Inspect the Free writing Schools which are Supported at the Townes Charge, And Also to Treat wth Mesues Hutchinsons relating to what they have proposed towards ye Encouragemt of a writing School at the North, and to make report to ye Town at their next meeting of what they Shall think proper relating thereto.


Voted. That John Clark Esq', Collo Adam Winthrop & Major Thomas Fiteh be the Sd Comittee.


Voted. That it be left to the Sel: men to appoint Veiwers of Cord-wood and that a peny p Cord be allowed them to be paid by ye buyer as was voted the last year.

And whereas the Sª Treasurer hath Signified to ye Town that the business of the Treasury of this Town for three years Last past, hatlı by far execeded what it was formerly when the Sume of fifteen pounds p annum for ye Serviee thereof was first allowed and that . he thinks it reasonable that the Town Should grant him some further reeompenee for his Sª Serviee, over and above the fifteen pounds for each of those years already granted.

Henry Howel is by vote chosen to serve as one of the Consta- bles for ye year ensuing in the room of m" John Broeeus who was Chosen in Mareh Last & refuseth to Serve.


Whereas the Comittee appointed at the Gen11 Town Meeting in in Mareh Last to Consider of the State of the Almes House, And also of Some Expedient for the more Effeetual preventing of Poor belonging to other Places from obtruding themselves on this Town, and to make report to the Town of what they Shall think proper to be done relating thereto.
