Voted. That it be left to ye diseretion of ye Select men to En- large the South burying place by takeing in part of the High way on the Easterly Side thereof, So as that there by ye Sª High way be not there by to much Straitened.

Voted. That the Sel: men are Impowered to Prolong Ebenezar Burges his Lease for abt thirty two years Longer So as to deter- mine at ye Same time with Websters Lease, under Such Rent as they Shall agree.


Voted. a grant to m' John Barnerd, Sehool mast an Adition of five pounds p' annum, So as to make up the Sume of Twenty pounds p' annum for ye Rent of his dwelling House.


[373.] In answere to the Petition of Thomas Boylston.


Voted a Grant to the Sª Thomas Boylston the Liberty of Setting his Brick House to Stand partly on the Northerly end of Peirees Alley So as that he Leave the Alley there full Six feet wide betwixt his and Doctor Noyes® Brick walls, Provided also that he Lay out & add unto the Said Alley So much of his Land in the Rear of his House as Shall be adjudged & accepted by the Select men as an Equivalent to ye above grant.

Voted. That the Select men be impowered to Lease out a peice

of Land on Dere Island not Exceeding one Acre, for a Term, not Exceeding Ninety nine years to be improved for the Erecting an Hospitall or Pest House there for the reception & entertainmt of Sick persons comeing from beyond Sea, and in Order to pre- vent the Spreading of Infection.


Voted. That the Town will procee to Supply ye Granary wth a Stock of Grain.


Voted. That the Select men be impowered to Lay out to ye Valuc of Seven hundred pounds in Grain Such as they Shall think most for the benefit of the Inhabitants. And to Lodg the Same in Such place or places where they Shall think most convenient.


Voted. a Grant of Two thousands Pounds to be Raised on ye Inhabit" and Estates within this Town, for the Reliefe of ye Poor & other necessary Charges arriseing within and for the Sd Town, for ye year ensuing.


In answere to a Motion made for Now Lying the Pavement from m' Boons corner to ye Gutter Leading down to Spring Strect in Cornhill.


Voted. That in Case the neighbourhood on each Side do agrce and undertake at their own charge to compleat what is accustomed of ye paing on each side That then the Town will defray the charge of New parcing their part in ye Middle.


Whereas Thomas Hutchinson Esq' hath now moved to ye Town for Paveing the uper end of Haukins Street, from Back Street as far down as against the House of m' Samuel Clark, the abutters on each Side agrecing at their own charge to pave wt is accus- tomed on each side. And the Sª Huthinson doth propose to defray the present Charge of doing ye Townes part thereof in ye Middle, Provided he may be reimbust by ye town out of ye next year's Tax.


Voted. an agreemen to the Sª motion.


Voted. That the Motion made for the Widening of Adkinsons Lane be left to ye Consideration of the Select men who are directed to make Report to ye Town at their next mcetin of what they Shall think proper relating thereto.


Voted. An Acceptance of the Report of ye Comittee appointed to consider of a Sutable place for a School House at ye Southly part of this Town : And that it be left to ye Select men to Sett out a convenient Peice of Land accordingly, viz' upon ye Comon adjoyning to Cowells Lott over agt m' Wainrights.


Voted. That all other the business of this meeting not gon thro' & concluded, be further continued to be consided at the next meeting.

[377.] Whereas the Comittee formerly appointed to manage the Erecting the Lyn of Deffence on the Neck, have now Signifyed to the Town that they have already Expended Sixty pounds, more then what was put into their hands for that Service, besides wch there is yet needfull abt one hundred and fifty pounds more to finish the Brick-work, to the extent of the stone worke. Voted that the Sa Comittee be disired to get finished the Said Brick-worke. And the Select men are directed to Supply the Sª Comittee wth money to defray the Charge thereof, wch is Supposed to be Abt two hun- dred pounds.


Voted. a grant of three hundred and fifty pounds for defraying ye Charge of the watch for the year Ensuing. And that the Select men be directed to post two watch men at the neck.


Voted. That a memoriall be Offered by ye Sel. men to ye Court of Gen" Sessions of the Peace, praying that in their Stating the Rule for apportioning the Watch Tax, due regard may be had to the Estates Watched. and that a greater difference then formerly be made between the Rates of the Rich', and of the Poorer Sort of the Inhabitants.

That it be given as an Instruction to the Gentl.men who Shall Represent this Town in ye Great and Gen" Court, to En- devour the obtaining directions in the Law, that the persons from time to time appointed to Serve as veiwers & Sealers of Cord wood wtbin this Town, may be under Oath for their faithfull discharge of that office.


Voted. That a Comittce be raised to Consider & make Enquiry ab Encourageing the bringing of Sea Coal into this Town.

Whereas the Town now hath come, and comeing into their Treasury fifteen hundred pounds in Bills of Credit, being the pro- duee of the Blue hill Lands formerly Sold.


Voted. That So much of the Sª money as the Town from time to time Shall See Cause to Improve for ye purchaceing of Grain for the use and Service of this Town, shall be applyed to that use, and the Residue thereof to be improved as the Town Shall direct.


Voted. That the Select men be desired and directed to Lav out So-much of the Sª Blue Hill money for the purchaceing of Grain as they Shall think best for the Town, and to take Such Seasons and methods for disposing and delivering out the Same as they Shall think best.

Whereas Thomas and Edward Hutchinsons Esqrs Executors of John Foster Esq" deceaced, have proposed to be at the Charge of Erecting a House Convenient for a Free writing School at the Northerly part of Boston for the benefit of Sª Town. Voted. That a Convenient part of that peice of Land weh the Town for- merly purchaced of m'8 Susanna Love be aplyed to that use. And that the Sª Mesues Hutchinsons together wth Adam Winthrop Esq" mesues Johu Ruck and John Charnock be a Comittec to Order and direct the Setting the Sd building there.


Voted. That ye Comittee abt a School House at ye South be de- sired to perfect their report Respecting ye dementions in Order to judg of Cost of Sd School House & whether they can think of a more couvenient place for ye Same.

Voted. A grant of fifty pounds in Addition to M' Nath" Wil- liams& Sallery for the year Ensuing.

That Cap Timothy Clark, Collo Edward IIntchinson, Capt Cyprian Southack, M' Sam" Greenwood, & Capt Gilbert Bant, be a Comittee to veiw and Consider the State of the Fortifi- cations of this Town, and Report what they think proper to be done thereon, and wheather they think it adviseable y a Battree be planted at the end of ye Long wharfe, and that the Same Comittee be Impowered to repair the North Battrey in the mnost prudent man- ner they can, not exceeding one hundred & fifty pounds, in the Charge there of, the web Snme is now agreed to be applyed to that use.


[379.] Voted. a grant of two thousand & two hundred pounds to be raised on the Inhabitants & Estates within this Town, for the reliefe of the Poor and other necessary Charges ariseing wihin and for the Sd Town for this present year.


At a meeting of the Free holders and Other Inhabit's of the Town of Boston duly qualified, being Regularly Assembled in a Publick Town Meeting at the Town House the 29th of December Olliver Noyes Esq' is chosen Moderator for this meeting.


Whereas the Select men, have Signified to ye Town that they on Te 19th cur under apprehension of Scareity of Grain have pur- chased ten thousand weight of Bread at 40 Shill. p' hundred for the Supply of ye Inhabitts of this Town and do now ask the mind of the Town abt the disposall of the Same.


Voted. That the Select men do Suspend the disposall thereof in greater quantityes for the Space of one moneth ensuing, And in the Intrim to Sell in Small quantityes to any of ye Inhabitants that Shall See canse to by.


The Comittee appointed to Consider abt the State of the Fortifi- cations of this Town, haveing now given to the Inhabit's at this meeting their Report in writeing of what they think proper Relat- ing thereto, and is now lying on file with the Town Clerk.


Voted that the Consideration of the Sd Report be continned untill the next meeting of the Inhabit's in March. Aud the Sd Comittee are further desired to make a Computation of the Charge of what they propose to have done, and Lay before ye Town at ye Same meeting. The Committee formerly appointed to Consider abt Erecting School-house at the South end of Boston, and according to the Townes Vote on the 11th of march Last.
