[264.] January the 18th. 1702. At a Publick Mecting of the Frecholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly qualified and warned according to Law, being convened at the Town House did then and there agree declare and vote as followeth viz *.


mr. Henry Dereing to be moderator for this meeting.


It being proposed whether the New Bills of Credit now to be used in Publick payments of the Province, Shall be taken and ac- cepted by the Town Treasurer in payments of the Town Rate at the Advance and after the rate of five p' Cent more then the Value therein Exprest, and the Same to pass out in payments, at their exprest value without the Said Advance, according to the Practice of the Province Treasury. Voted in the Affirmative.


Voted that the Sclect men do Humbly Address His Exccley. the Governor that he will please to prevent the Trasportation of men out of the province.


It being proposed to the Town for the regulateing of Funeralls and Lesscning the Charge thercof. That dureing the present Sickness in the Town and untill furder order, that there be only a first and Second bell Tol'd at each Funerall, cach bell not to ex- cecd the space of halfe a quarter of an hour, And that there be a Moderation in the prizes of Coffins, digging of Graves, and wages of Porters for carrying the corps, And also that there be two or

three black cloaths provided at the Town charge to Lay over the Corps, Voted that it be left with the Select inen to aet in the fore- ging perticulers respecting Funeralls, as they in prudence Sec meet.


Voted that the Seleet men do cause a pump to be placed in the Condit by the Doek nigh Wings Lanc, at the Town Charge and for Publick use in ease of Fire.


Voted that the Select men do appoint Officers to Inspect & In- form against the breach of the Town orders, and to allow them a Competent reward for their Service at ye Town eharge.

Upon the Motion of mr. Thomas Okes he alledging that there is Lately Recovered of him Twenty-five Shillings as a rate formerly Assesed upon George Danson. Voted that Sd. Mr. Okes be allowed the Sd. Sum of Twenty-five Shillings to be pd. him by the Treasur.


MI. Joseph Belknaps Motion abt. Purchaseing or hireing a peiee of the Towns Land next to his house. It is referred to the Seleet men to consider and make report what they think proper abt. it at the next Town Meeting.


Voted that the Seleet men do advise and pursue what they think proper to be done in Asserting & Secureing the Towns Intrest in the Blue Hill Lands at Brantry.


Voted that Mr. James Taylor be paid out of the Treasury of this Town the Sum of fifteen pounds for his Service as Treasurer for the year past.


[267.] Voted that the Sum of Seven hundred pounds be raised as a Town rate and Assessed on the Inhabitants and Residents of this Town to be imployed in defraying the Necessary Charges arriseing wth. in the Town & for the repairing the Highway on the neck Leading to Roxbury.


Upon the Motion of m'. Francis Thrasher abt. paveing Some bad place in the Neck, It is Left wth. the Selectmen to agree wth. him or Some other person abt. the Same as they shall judg most convenient.


Voted that the Select men do make Inquiry abt. the Towns Lands and rents & Lay an Inventary thereof before the Town.

mr. Nathaniell Oliver chosen to Serve as Comissioner to joyn wth. the Seleet men or Assessors who made the valuation of the Estates in this Town the Last year to make a valuation of Polls and Estates as the Law now direets.


Mr. Daniell Oliver is chosen to Assist in sd. worke in the room of mr. Robert Gibbs deeeaeed.


Capt. Timothy Clarke is chosen to assist therein, who being ehosen thereunto the Last year (but being taken off upon other Publiek Serviee) was diverted then.


Mr. Thomas Fiteh is chosen to Serve as Seleet man in the room of Mr. Richard Draper, who refuseth to Serve.


Mr. Edward Proetor is chosen to Serve as a Clark of the market in the room of mr. William Sheppreeve.

June 25th. At a Publick meeting of the Free holders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly quallified and warned being convened this day did by vote declare as followeth. vizt.


Coll. Penn Townsend is chosen Moderator for this meeting.


The Town by their vote do declare their Approbation of Mr. Nathaniell Williams to be an Assistat to m'. Ezekiell Chever in Governing & Instructing the youth at the Lattin School.


Voted that Mr. Nathniel Williams be allowed the Sum of Eighty pounds for the year ensueing in case he accept and perform the aforesaid Service.


And it is Left to the Select men to agree wth him accordingly.


[269.] March the 13th. 1703/4 .. At a mccting of the Free holders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly qualli- fied and warned According to Law, being convened at the Town House on the day aforesaid, did then & there chuse, Vote, declare and Agree as followeth vizt.

That the Overseers of the Poor have Liberty to procure Some meet person or persons to preach a Sermon to the persons in the Almes-House once every Saboth day dureing Such time as a com- petent number of persons are their confincd and to defray the Charge thereof to the value of Ten Shillings for each Saboth (on web a Sermon is there Preached, ) out of the Town Treasury ex- cepting for Such Saboth dayes on which any of the Settled Min- isters of this Town Shall preach there.


Agreed not to chuse Assessors distinct from the Select men.

Timothy Clark, are ap- pointed to be a Committee to veiw the Fortifications of this Town, and Advise about the repaires thereof. and the Selectmen are to Expend thereon not exceeding the Sum of fifty pounds.


Voted. that a New School House be build in Stead of the Old School House in weh m' Ezekiell Chever Teacheth, and it is Left with the Select men to get the Same accomplished.


Voted that the Sum of Twelve hundred pounds be Assessed by the Select men on the Inhabitants and Estates of this Towu, to be imploved in defraying the necessary Charges there of.

Francis Thrasher for his Service in Overseeing the Repaircing the Almes House & yard & the fenceing the burying . place and the Pound, & his manageing the paveing at the neck, and his Service as Overseer of the Pcor, Like wise thanks to Mr. Rob' Calef for his Servic: as an Overseer of ye Poor.

Samuell Bridge, Thomas Leveret, Sam11. Thorn & William Shepreeve wre. chosen to Serve as Hogreeves for ye ensueing year.


Samuell Bridge, Capt. Thomas Barnerd, Peter Wire & David Langdon were chosen to Serve as Fenee Veiwers for the year ensucing.


Voted that mr. Nathaniell Williams be paid at the rate of Eighty pounds p Annum for his Serviee at the Lattin School for the year currant and for the year thenee next ensucing.


Voted that Elisha Cook Esq". Elisha Hutchinson Esq. & John Foster Esq. be a Committee to treat and gree with Samuell Sewall Esq'. about purehaceing of him a peice of Land for the Enlarge- ment of the north Burying place.


Elisha Cook Esq. Elder Joseph Bridgham, Capt. Ephraim Sav- age, Capt. Bozoon Allen, & Capt. Oliver Noyse are chosen a Com- mittec to consider and draw up what they shall thinek proper on the behalfe of this Town, to Lay before the Gen11. Court at their next Sessions, relateing to a Petition of Sundry of the Inhabitants of Muddy River who pray that they may be dismist from the Town of Boston: & become a Town Ship of themselves.


[276.] For the preventing of Rams going with the Ewes out of due Season, within the District of Rumny Marsh. Ordered. That whosoever of the Inhabitants within the district aforesaid Shall finde or take up any Ram going with his or. their Sheep, at any time from the tenth of August to the Tenth of November yearly, Such Ram Shall be forfeited to Such person so finding and takeing up the Same.


May the 14th 1705. At a meeting of the free holders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly qualified and warned According to Law being convened at the Town House the day and year aforesaid, did then and there Vote ehuse, and declare as followeth vizt.


Mr. John White to be moderator he not accepting Penn Town- send Esq. to be the moderator for this meeting.


William Briggs chosen to Serve as Constable for the year ensue- ing in the room of William Tilley, the said Briggs being present pleading his being Latly Imprest and haveing now his Servant in Her Majties Service at the Castle in his room is by a vote of the Town dismist from Serveing as Constable for this year.
