Voted that M'. Nathaniell Williams be allowed the Same Sal- lery for his Service as School master for the year ensueiug as for se year Last past.

It being pleaded on the behalfe of Peter Wear that his Serveing as Constable for the ensuing year under the present Circumstances of his family would prove extreamly prejudiciall to him, upon weh the Town by their Vote do excuse him from that Service for the year ensueing.


Voted that the filling up of Constables be deferred uutill the next Town meeting.

[280.] March the 29th 1706. At a meeting of the Free holders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Bostou, duly qualified and warned According to Law. being convened at the Towu-House, the day and year aforesaid did theu and there Vote agree declare and chuse as followeth vizt.


Pen Townsend Esq. to be the Moderator for this present meeting.


Voted that Seven persons Shall be chosen to Serve as Overseers of the Poor and to mannage the affaires of the Almes & work House for the year ensucing in the like methode as the Same was managed in the Last year.


Simien Stoddard Esq. Thomas Palmer Esq". Messurs. John Borland. John Pitts, Henry Dering, Francis Clark & William Welsteed are chosen to Serve as Overseers of the Poor for the year ensueing.


Voted the reasumeing the Vote of the Town at the Last meet- ing referring to the not Chuseiug of Assessors Distinct from the Select men.


Voted that Assessors for apportioning the Province Tax for this year. be chosen distinct from the Select men.

Voted the reasumeing the Vote of the Last meeting referring to the choyee of a Collector.


Voted that there Shall be a Collector or Collectors chosen to collect the Province Tax for the year ensueing.


Voted that One Collector be chosen & the Same to be done by a Paper Vote.


Mr. Samuell Bridge is chosen to Serve as Collector of the Prov- ince Rates & Taxes for the year ensueing, and it is left with the Select men to agree with him for such Sum or Suines as they shall judg to be a Sutable reward for his Sª Service.


Voted that One hundred Pounds be Assessed on the Inhabitants & Estates of this Town and Layd out in paveing the mayn Street twarsds or Leading to the Sonth end of the Town & fifty pounds more in paveing at the Lower end of the Town Honse, & that eleven hundred & fifty pounds more be in like manner raised for defraying the other charges of the Town.


[281.] Voted that the Sum of fifteen pounds be paid out of the Treasury unto Joseph Prout for his Service as Treasurer in the Last year.


Henry Hill is by Vote exeused from Serveing as Tythingman for this year, it being aledged that he hath been this year im- . pressed to Serve Her Majtie at the Castle.


Samuel Jaekling & Joshua Winsor aledging Infirmity of Body, and Lt. Sam11. Johnson & Robert Butcher aldging their being nn- der Oath in other offices in ye Town yet not with standing the Town by their Vote do refuse to exense either of them from Serve- ing as Tythingmen for the year ensueing.


John Barbour and John Cookson are chosen to Serve as Tything- men in the room of John Rnek and Joseph Russell who have fined.


Obediah Proetor is chosen to Serve as Tything-man in the room of William Man who hath fin'ed.


Thomas Peck is chosen to Serve as Tythingman in the room of James Gooch who hath fin'ed.


Soloman Kneeland is chosen to Serve as Tything-man in the room of Henry Hill.

Voted. that a Committee be apointed to Consider of what shall be needfull to be done about Fortifieing the Town for its defence against the Enemie : and that the Sª Committee do make appli- cation to his Excellencey the Governor for his Approbation therein. And to make report to the next Town meeting of what they Shall thinck proper to to Lay before the Town relating thereunto.

After Some debates at the Sª. Town meeting abt. the premisies, they proceeded to pass the following votes vizt.


Voted that the Sum of one Thousand pounds money be assessed on the Inhabitants and Estates within this Town to be layd out in Fortifieing the Town in manner afore Sd.


Voted that the Town will choose Seven persons to be a Commit- tee to manage the Sª affaire.


Voted the Thanks of this Town to the Sª Committee for what they have already done for the Town abt. the premisies and that they vizt .. Elisha Cook Esqr., Elisha Hutchenson Esqr., Pen Townesend Esqr., Collo. Samuel Checkley, and Capt. Oliver Noyse together with Thomas Brattle, Esq"., and Capt. Timothy Clark, arc the persons nominated and chosen to be the Committee to manage the affaires of the Fortifications as afore Sd.


Voted that the Sª Committee may at their discretion improve Some part of the aforcsaid Sum, in preparations to make Some defence upon Noddles Iseland.


Voted that the Said Sum of One thousand pounds, and the Sum formerly granted by the Town for defraying the other necessary Charges arriseing within the Same be Speedily apportioned and collected, and that the first of Sd money So collected Shall be im- proved for the Sª Fortifications, and that the Sª Committee are desired to be Spcedy in their Endevours to Set abt. Sª worke.


At a meeting of the Frec holders and other inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly Qualified and warned according to Law, be- ing Convened at the Town house the 21th day of October, 1706, did then and there agrec conclude and declare as followeth, vizt.

[284.] Voted that the Iuhabitants of this Town will pro- ceed to graut a further Supply of money for the Secureing & fin- ishing the wharffs already begun aud placed att Merryes Poynt, and for the Fortification to be placed there. Aud also for Some Additionall wharfe to face the old wharfe where the guns formerly Stood. in order to improve the Same for an income to the Town.


Voted That one Thousand pounds money be Assessed on the In- habitants and Estates within this Town to be laid out on ye Wharffs and Fortification at Merryes Poynt, & ye Same to be Ap- portioned with ye next T. Rate.

Voted that the Committee abt the Petition of Severall of the In- habitants of Rumny marsh abt building a meeting House there, be continued and desired furder to prepare and make report of what they thinck proper to offer in that affaire unto next Gen" meeting of this Town.


Voted that the Sum of One hundred pound be raised and Assessed on the Inhabitants & Estates in this Town, to be added to the hundred pounds Raysed ye Last year, & to be layd out in paveing the maine Street towards & Leading to the South end of this Town.


Voted the raiseing of money to defray the other Necessary Charges of this Town be deferred untill the next Town's meeting.

Collo. Samuell Checkley, M'. Elizur Holyoke, Doct". Thomas Okes. Cap. Ephraim Savage are by the Majority of Electors present chosen to Serve as Representitives for Sd Town at the next Gen" Assembly to be held ye 28th of May Curr. & So De Die in Diem &c.


M :. Thomas Walker who being before chosen to Serve as one of the Assessors to apportion the Rates and Taxes for the year Ensueing and hath not as yet declared his Acceptance of S Office, doth now in the Publick Town meeting declare his acceptance there of. & that he will tak: ye oath as directed by Law.


Samuel Lynde Esq'. & m'. Benjamen Walker are chosen to Serve as two the Assessors for the year ensuring in the room of Capt. Thomas Fitch & mr. Robert Calefe, who have declined Sª Service.


Vote'l the continuance and Support of the Select watch for the jear ensueing. in like manner as it now is, with Submision to his Excellency the Governor as to his allowance & direction abt the ontinuance there of.


Voted that what money Shall by the Selectmen judged needfull , defray the the Charge of Sd watch for the year ensucing Shall e Levyed on the Inhabitants of this Town in manner as the Law rects, provided the Same exceed not the Summe of Three hundred Jund.
