M' Edward Hutchinson is by ye Majority of Voters Chosen to Serve as Representitive for this Town according to a Precept now read. under the Hand & Seal of John Burrel Esq' Speaker of ye House of Representitives.


. Voted. That a Town Meeting be appointed to debate & deelare whether they are for a Publiek or Private Bank.


Voted. That the time of ye Sª meeting be monday next at nine of the Clock in the forenoon. And that the Seleet men do order Warrants to be Isued forth for the Calling ye Sd meeting.


The Honble Judg Sewell being called away Capt Ephr" Savage is chosen Moderator.


Voted. That it be left wth the Select men (at their discretion) to dispose of the Graine of ye Townes now Lying in the Granary, at Snch time and in Such manner as they Shall think fit & conven- ient.

Mesures Edwd Davis and Josiah Biles have declared their refusall to Serve as Constables for the year ensuing.


Voted. That the Assessors for the year 1715 be impowered for the Space of Three Months next ensuing to make Such further Abatements of the Rates and Taxes Comitted to the Constables as they Shall think needfull.


[363.] Voted. That ye Town will not choose Collectors dis- tint from ye Constables.


Voted. That the Constables of this Town who are to Colleet the Rates & Taxes for the year ensuing, Shall be Allowed three penee on the pound for Collecting, Provided they pay in their first halfe of the Sumes eomitted to them, to the Respective Treasurers by the first of Febry next and also Compleat and pay in the whole by the first day of June from thenee next following. And that Only Such of the Sª Constables who Shall So pay in according to the times of payment as afore Sª are to be Entituled to the Sd allowance of three penee on ye pound.

Voted. That Joseph Prout be allowed out of the Treasury ye Sume of Thirty pounds as a Reeompenee for his Last years Ser- viee as Treasurer.


Whereas the Committee formerly Raysed to Consider of of what they Shal think proper to Suppress abuses to the Inhabit's of this Town by Hueksters.


And of Some Effeetual means to Oblige persons to pave & Repaire pavement in the Streets agt their Lands. Have now (Relating to that of Hucksters) given their Opinion that the best way to prevent that abuse, is for ye Town to come into the Setting up of a Publiek Market &e.

That the Same Comittee Viz' Addington Davenport Esq', Thomas Fiteh Esq", Elisha Cook Esq", Oliver Noyes Esq', Samuel Keeling Esq', untº weh Comittee they do now Add Thomas Hutchinson Esq", Adam Winthrop Esq" and M' John White, desireing them ye Said comittee to Consider and Lay before ye Town at their next Publiek meeting, what they Shall think proper for ye Town to do, Relating to the Setting up of a Publiek Market in this Town. And also abt Paveing & repairing pavemt in ye Streets agt the Lands of pertieular persons.


Voted. That the Seleet meu be desired to consider abt the im- proveing of that peiee of Vaeant Land nigh Capt Southaeks House and what manner of Buildings are proper there to be Erected. and to make Report of what they Shall think proper therin, to the Town at their next Meeting.


Voted. That a writeing School be Erected at the Southerly part of this Town.


Voted. That ye United Comittee who have money to Lay out for ye Suport of a writing School, be desired to apply the Same, for Such a School at ye South Eud of this Town.

Voted. That a Comittee be raised to Consider of a proper place for ereeting a School House at the Southerly part of this Town, and to make report to the Town at their next meeting of what they Shall think proper relating thereto.


Voted. That Samuel Sewall Esq', m' Dauiel Oliver, Capt Tim- othy Clark, m' Thomas Walker, & m" Henry Hill be the Sd Com- ittee who are also desired to Consider abt the demeutions of Sueh School House.

Voted. That the Granting money to defray the charge of this Town be deferred untill the next meeting.

Town of Boston duly qualified, being Regularly Assembled in a Publick Town Meeting at the Town-House the 8th of May 1716.


M' John White is chosen to Serve as moderator for this Mcet- ing.


Voted. That the Town will chuse four Representitives 376 Voters.


Elisha Cook Esq', Anthony Stoddard Esq, Oliver Noyes Esq, & William Payn Esq', are by ye majority of Voters chosen to Serve as Representitives of this Town according to the precept now read.


Mesues Wigglesworth Sweetsir, Michael Shaler, (who wr both Sworn) and m' John Walley mercht were chosen to Serve as Con- stables for the year ensuing, in the room of three others who wr Chosen in March Last and have refused to Serve.


M' John Walley haveing Signified his answere by Consta Moffet that he refuseth to Serve in that office.


In his room M' David Craig is chosen to Serve as Constable for the year ensuing ; and hath pd his fine.


In the room of m' Eneas Salter who at ye Town meeting in March Last was chosen to Serve as a Clerk of ye Market & hath refused to Serve in Sª Office.


M' William Sanders is Chosen to Serve as Clerk of ye Market for ye year ensuing.


In the room of mr Oba Reed who in March Last was Chosen a Fence Veiwer, and hath Refused to Serve in that Office.


M' William Brown is Chosen to Serve as Fence Veiwer for the year ensuing.


Whereas in answere to the Petition of Elizabeth Lyford, Grand- Child to Thomas Smith deceaced, claiming a Right to a peice or parcel of Land of her Sª Grand-fathers Estate now in ye Posses- sion of this Town: The S' Town, did then raise a Comittee to Consider and make report to the Town of what they Shall think proper to be done therein. And the Sª Comittee haveing now given in their Report thereon in writeing, and being read at this meeting weh is as followeth vizt.


Pursuant to the desire of the Town by their above recited Vote, wee have made Inquiry into the Right of the Sª Eliza Lyford, and her claim to the above Sª Land, and haveing heard & considered what was Offered both on behalfe of the Town and of the Sd Eliza. Are of Oppinion in consideration that ye whole [367.] Personal Estate, with the dwelling house & Land Adjoyning, hath been disposed of and Sold by the Town for the Support & Subsisting of Thomas Son of the above said Thomas Smith, That therefore the above Sª remaining peice or parcel of Land, ought to be delivered to the Sª Elizabeth Lyford the Petitioner, She quitting her claim to the above Said House & Land Sold by the Town as afore Sª Boston, March the 10th 1615-16. Richard Draper, Thomas Cushing two of ye Sd Comittee.


And where as the Sd Elizabeth hath now presented unto the Town a Quit claim of ye House & Land afore Sd, and ye Same being read to the Town and by them accepted.


Voted. a grant unto the Sª Elizabeth Lyford according to the afore Said Comittees Report.

BOSTON TOWN RECORDS, 1716.


In answere to the Petition of Nathaniel Butt, who is the pres- ent Teunant to this Town for Deer Island.


Voted. a grant to him the Sd Nath" Butt of Twenty eight pounds to be allowed by ye Town Treasurer in Consideration of the great Loss he Sustained by ye Loss of his Sheep in the great Storm weh hapened in January Last, Provided that, (according as he now promiseth) he will dureiug the remainder of his present Lease, Improve ye Sª Islaud to grazeing as formerly he hath done.


Voted. That Liberty be given to the Select men (if they Shall think it for the benefitt of the Town) to purchace and Lay in more grain So as to make up the whole Stock of, grain to be five thousand bushels, and not to exceed that quantity.


Voted. That it be left with the Select men to Consider and make report to the Town when they meet next, of what they Shal think proper Relating to the paveing of Summer Strect.


And likewise to Consider and make report relateing to the motion made ab Repairing the Northly Side of ye Dock, and wharfe there to adjoyning.


Voted. That the consideration of Providing a Town Clock to be placed in the Brick meeting House be continued to ye next meeting.


Voted. That the Town will adjourn this meeting to Some other day.


Voted. That this meeting be adjourned to Fryday the eighteenth of May Curr at two of the Clock in the after noon, and the other buisiness of this meeting is further continued untill then.


At a meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston duly qualified (According to Adjournment) being regularly Assembled the 18th day of May 1716.

M' Robert Sanders is chosen to Serve as Constable for the year ensuing, and being present was accordingly Sworn.


Voted. A Grant of Two Thousand Pounds to be raised on ye Inhabitants and estates within this Town, and to be applyed for the Reliefe of the Poor, and other Necessary Charges ariseing within and for the Sd Town for year ensuing.


Voted. A further grant, of Fonr hundred pounds to be raised as aforesaid and to be layd out for paveing in ye H: wayes wth in this Town.


Voted. A grant of Three hundred pounds to be raised on ye Inhabitts & residents of this Town, and to be applyed to the Sup- port of the wateh.


Voted. That the Projection an Aet (For facilitating the Pave- ing of the Streets in Boston) and now under consideration at this meeting, be further continued untill Some other Publick meeting of the Inhabit of y8 Town.


It being Signified to the Town that the paveing in Charter Street, and in School Street hath not as yet been Effected accord- ing to former Votes by reason ye Some of the Abbutters are either Unable or onwilling to Carry on their proportions thereof.


Voted. That it be left to the Select men, accoding to their diseretion to get the Said pavement done.


Voted. That ye Comittee formerly Appointed to Consider abt a School house at ye South end of this Town be further continucd.


Voted. That the Sel: men be impowered, In ease they Shall judged it for the benefit of ye Town, To mak Some Addition to the wharfe on ye North Side of ye Town Dock as they Shall See meet.

That the Constables who are to Collect the Rates & Taxes of this Town for the year ensuing, Shall be allowed three pence on the pound for Collecting : Provided they pay in their first halfe of the Sumes comitted to them, to the respective Treasurers by the first of Feb'y next : and also Com- pleat & pay in the whole by the first day of June from thence next following and that only Such of the Sd Constables who Shall So pay in according to the times of payment as afore Sd are to be Intituled to the Sª Allowance of three pence on ye pound.
