City; later he attended Delaware Acade- my at Delhi, and then entered Hamilton College, from which he was graduated as salutatorian of the clas of 1891; after graduation he was teacher of Greek and English in Cascadilla School, Ithaca; at the age of twenty-four he was elected to the chair of Oratory and Debate at Cor- nell University, the youngest professor ever appointed in that institution; when the Spanish War broke out he resigned his professorship and volunteered as private in the 203d Regiment, N. Y. Volunteer Infantry; was promoted to be sergeant, sergeant-major and lieuten- ant, serving with his regiment at Camp Black and Camp Mead; he resigned from the army when the protocol of peace was signed, declined a commission to serve against the Filipinos, and resumed his Uni- versity position ; he received the Democrat- ic nomination for member of Assembly from Tompkins county in 1899, but was forced to withdraw because of legal tech- nicality, being a Civil Service Commis- sioner of the City of Ithaca within nlnety days of election ; since 1899 he has been editor-in-chief of the Ithaca Daily News; in 1900 he became president of the Ithaca Publishing Company; he was author of the "ice trust" resolution in the 1900 Democratic State Convention; in 1902 he was prominently mentioned for nomina- tion as Secretary of State, and in 1904 as Lieut. Governor, on the Democratic ticket; he was permanent chairman of the State Convention in 1904; he resigned from the Cornell University Faculty in June, 1904, in order to give more atten- tion to his editorial and public duties; member Theta Delta Chi, Delta Chi, and Phi Beta Kappa Fraternities, also of the Masonic and Elks orders; his wife is the daughter of George R. Congressman; born 1874, town of New Paltz, where his ancestors have lived ever since its settlement by the Huguenots in 1678. Jacob Lefevre, during the term of the latter as Congressman, and was likewise secretary of different committees. Afterward he spent a year in travel in the far West and in Mexico; he soon after entered as bookkeeper of the Huguenot National Bank, of which his father is president, determined to work his way up and learn all the details of the business. being descended from an old Westchester County family who came to this country in the seventeenth century, and can be traced back to Essex County, England, where it dwelt for many generations, the name being derived from a Papal Legate, who lived far back in the family line. Francis H. Leggett recived academic ed- ucation, and upon its completion, in 1856, he began his business life as a clerk in a produce commission house; he contin- used there until 1862, when he went into business on his own account, in partner- ship with an older brother, and contin- ued thus associated until 1870, when he withdraw to engage in business with his younger brother, Theodore (now de- ceased), the name of the new firm being Francis H. Leggett & Co. The business increased rapidly, and in a few years oc- cupied four buildings. In 1881 the present warehouse on West Broadway, Franklin and Varick Streets, was erected and equipped for the handling of groceries on the largest scale. The house does a large importing business in high -class groceries, coffees and teas, while many articles are manufactured front the raw material, or otherwise prepared for the trade, on the King Street premises of the firm; in addition it has an office in Bord- eaux, France, and since the origin of the firm three other partners have been ad- mitted, the original firm name being re- tained. Director in the Washington Trust Co., a trustee in the Greenwich Savings Bank, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and Produce and Mercan- tile Exchanges; he was formerly a di- rector of the National Park Bank, which position he held for twelve years, but has since resigned. He is a member also of several social organizations, including the Metropolitan, Union League, the Merch- ants, and other clubs; takes a warm in- terest in the Charity Organization So- ciety, or the association of public chari- ties, of this city being a member of its council and a frequent contributor to its funds. His country seat is at Stone Ridge, Ulster County, N. Y., where he has an extensive establishment. His city residence is at 269 Madison Ave., N. Y. City.
