FARRELLY, Stephen :


American News Co. manager; born Ire- land in 1843; his father emigrated to America during the political troubles of 1848, and in 1860 the son entered the serv- ice of Dexter & Brother, news agents, N. Y. City, and afterward prominent mem- bers of the American News Co., founded in 1864. Leaving this employment at this time, Mr. Farrelly went South, and there undertook the management of the book firm of John W. Cooper & Co., of Savan- nah, Ga., then in a desperate state as a result of the war. By his strenuous ex- ertions he made compromises with the creditors of the house, and, in partnership with the firm, managed for several years its business with great success. Selling out his interest in 1869, he returned to N. Y. City, and established the National News Co. This, after a few years of prosperous business, became merged in the American News Co., of which Mr. Farrelly was made a Director. In 1878 he went to Philadelphia as manager of the Central News Co., a branch house of the American News Co. The busines of this company was handled by him with much efficiency, he inaugurating the wagon de- livery system and also the method of short credits and quick collections. It now occupies a handsome building on South Washington Square and does a thriving business. Mr. Farrelly is vice-president of the City Trust, Safe Deposit and Surety Co. of Philadelphia; director of the City Trust Co. of N. Y .; treasurer of the Ro- man Catholic Orphan Asylum; member of various clubs and associations. Some years ago he gave up his connection with

Merchant; born Boston, 1836, educated in the schools of that city. Obtained a position in the house of Lawrence, Stone & Co., with whom he remained until about twenty-four years of age. In 1860, having the capital to engage in commercial life on his own account, he came to New York in company with Mr. Stone; a partnership was organized, under the firm name of Stone, Bliss, Fay & Allen, for the purpose of conducting a dry goods business. At the end of ten years the firm was re- organized, becoming Perry, Wendell, Fay & Co., the business gradually changing from dry goods to the woolen commission line, to which it has long been confined. In 1878 the firm became known by its present name of Wendell, Fay & Co. Mr. Fay is also connected with several finan- cial concerns, being a director in the Han- over National Bank and trustee of Citi- zens' Savings Bank; member of Union League and Merchants Clubs, and Sons of the American Revolution.
