BIGGS, Hermann Michael:
Physician: horn on Sept. 29. 1853. Tompkins County, N. Y .: was graduated from Cornell in 1882, taking the degree of A. B., and from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1883; was appointed on the Resident Staff of Bellevue Hospital (competitive examination) in April, 1883, and served for a year and a half; after leaving the hospital studied abroad, es- pecially bacteriology and pathology in the Universities of Berlin and Greifswald. and then returned to take charge of the Carnegie Laboratory of the Bellevue Hospital Medical College at the time of its opening in 1985; in 1886 he was com- missioned by the directors of Carnegie Laboratory to visit Paris to study the treatment of hydrophobia at the Pasteur Institute by the method then just an- nounced by Pasteur: he remained director of the Carnegie Laboratory for a num- ber of years and professor of general pathology and pathological anatomy in Bellevue Hospital Medical College: he re- signed these positions to accept the chair of therapeutics and clinical medicine in 1892. and in 1898 became adjunct pro- fessor of the practice of medicine; he or- ganized and directed the work of the Bacteriological Laboratories of the De- partment of Health of N. Y. City, which were the first municipal laboratories in the world; in 1901 he was appointed gen- eral medical officer of the Department of Health; he is attending physician at Bellevue, St. Vincent's, Willard Parker and Riverside Hospitals; he is a member
