St. John Harper; studied drawing and painting at National Academy of Design · under Wil- marth and LeClear; at Art Students' League under Shirlaw and Chase, N. Y., and under Munkacky and Bonnat in Paris ; manager of the art department N. Y. Daily Graphic, the first illustrated daily paper, 1878; president Art Students' League, 1881-83; member N. Y. Etch- ing Club, 1884; associate member Na- tional Academy of Design, 1892; instructor and managing director of Art Students League, 1900-02; instructor at Art School, Cooper Union,1902-05; instructor drawing, painting and design, Newark Technical School, 1902-05; received Clark prize (1892) for painting Autumn. Among his best known works are: A Fairy Tale, An Opera Night, The Beach Patrol, Spring Sunshine, A Legend of Spring, The Silent Snow, Mayflowers, Winter's Veil, which received honorable mention at Pan-Am- erican Exposition; has made many etch- ings and dry-prints; and book illustra .- tions; married Mary Palmer Hedderwick, of London. HARRIGAN, Edward:
Actor; born N. Y. City, Oct. 26, 1845; has appeared in nearly all the principal variety theatres of the country; subse- quently accepted an offer from Tony Pas- tor to appear at his theatre in N. Y. City. After leaving Pastor's was on the road three years; later assumed the manage- ment of the Theatre Comique, and after several seasons secured control of the Globe Theatre in 1881; in Dec., 1884 the Globe was destroyed by fire, after which he played at the Fourteenth Street Thea- tre; later opened a theatre on West 35th St., which he continued until 1890, when he retired; author of many successful plays, among which are: Chowder, Sur- prise, Mulligan's Silver Wedding, The Major, The Grip, The Doyle Brothers, and Under Cover (1903); member of Play- ers Club.
