JACKSON, Joseph Cooke:
Lawyer and soldier; is of colonial and Revolutionary ancestry; son of the late John P. Jackson and Elizabeth Wolcott Jackson ; born Newark, N. J., Aug. 5, 1$35; studied at the famous old academy of his native town, later at Phillips An- dover, and was graduated from Yale Col- lege in 1857; he then entered on the study of law at the Harvard Law School (where he was class orator), and the University of the City of N. Y .; in 1860 he was ad- mitted to the Bar in N. Y. and began practice, but at the outbreak of the war volunteered his services and was at once ordered to report as aide to Brigadier- General Robert Anderson ; subsequently he was commissioned second lieutenant of the First New Jersey Regiment, and appointed aide to General Phil. Kearny; soon after he was offered the colonelcy of the Sixty- first N. Y. Regiment, but declined ; at the close of 1861 he was transferred to the staff of General William B. Franklin, and the summer following was promoted cap- tain for gallant conduct during the Seven Days' fight before Richmond, and assigned to the Sixth Corps of the Army of the Po- tomac; a year later he was appointed lieu- tenant-colonel of the Sixth New Jersey Volunteers, and only a few weeks after, brevetted colonel for "meritorious conduct at the battle of Fredericksburg"; on March 13, 1865, he was brevetted brigadier-gen- eral of volunteers, after having partici- pated in twenty-one battles, including the Seven Days' battle, Second Bull Run, An- tietam, and Fredericksburg ; General Jack- son was appointed by the War Department a commissioner of U. S. naval cadets; in 1865 General Jackson resumed the prac- tice of law in New York, and in 1870 was appointed assistant U. S. district attorney for the Southern District of New York;

JACKSON, Samuel Macauley :
Editor, student of church history and co-operator in organized philanthropy ; born N. Y., June 19, 1851; son of George T. and Letitia Jane (Aikin) Macauley; was educated in a private school from 1858-63; in Ward School No. 35 from 1863-65; entered introductory class of N. Y. Free Academy in 1865; the name was changed in 1866 to College of the City of N. Y., and from that institution he was graduated in 1870; that year he entered the Theological Seminary at Princeton, N. J., and the next passed to Union Theolog- ical Seminary in N. Y. City, whence he was graduated in 1873; the next two years were spent in study and travel abroad. From 1876 to 1880 he was pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Norwood, N. J .; his life as a literary worker began in 1878, when he assisted the late Philip Schaff upon the Bible Dictionary which bears Schaff's name; from 1880 to 1884 he was associate and managing editor of the Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia; in 1891 he brought out the Concise Dictionary of Re- ligious Knowledge; in 1898 the first vol- ume of a biographical series entitled, He- roes of the Reformation, to embrace ten volumes, and to it he contributed the bio- graphy of Huldreich Zwingli (1901, sec- ond edition 1903) ; in 1898 also inaugurat- ed the Hand-Book for Practical Workers in Church and Philanthrophy (nine vol- umes) ; his help has been given upon var- ious general encyclopedias and diction- aries ; in 1903 he began the revision of the Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia ; much of his time has been gratuitously given to the public in other ways; from 1887 to 1904
