RYAN, Mrs. Thomas F .:
Philanthropist. Mrs. Ryan was Miss Ida Mary Barry, the daughter of John Smith Barry, a prominent merchant of Baltimore, and he was the son of Robert Barry, who married Miss Amelia Ramsay, daughter of Colonel Dennis Ramsay, of Alexandria, Va., a colonel in the Revo- lutionary army. Mrs. Ryan has given away within the last few years nearly three million dollars in charity, and has built, endowed or assisted over one hundred churches, chapels and hospitals. She is the wife of Thomas Fortune Ryan, the capitalist, and her address is 60 Fifth Ave., N. Y. City.

He be- came superintendent of the Sunday School, leader of the choir, and president of the Young Men's Christian Association. In 1870 he was a delegate of the Young Men's Christian Association to the Inter- national Convention at Indianapolis, Ind .; here he first met Dwight L. Moody, with whom he was associated until the latter's death. April, 1886, he presented the town of New Castle, Pa., with a Young Men's Christian Association building.
