Appleton, his grand- father, Daniel Appleton, founder of the publishing house of D. Appleton & Co .; preparatory to college course in Harvard he spent part of the years 1866 and 1867 studying in Germany; on his return he continued his studies, preparatory to passing a college examination; in 1867, when only fifteen years of age, he en- tered the famous Boston Cadet Corps, with which he gained his first experience of military life; during this period he was entered at Harvard, but was not able to graduate, the demands of the publishing house requiring his presence in 1871, and inducing him to give up college for busi- ness. Since that date he has continued one of the most active members of the firm; he enlisted on Oct. 31, 1871, as a private in F Company, Seventh Regiment, of which company he has remained a member ever since; promoted captain Jan., 1879; under Captain Appleton, Co. F grew rapidly in numbers; on July 18, 1889, Captain Appleton was elected to succeed Emmons Clark as colonel of the regiment, a position which he still re- tains; he is unmarried, and is a member of a number of the leading clubs of New York, including the Century, Union and the New York Athletic.
