City, 1851; in 1858 became a clerk in the firm of David Dows & Co., and three years later was admit- ted into partnership; is a member of the Produce Exchange and has been its pres- ident several times, as well as member of the Nu Sigma Nu College Fraternity; member of the Deutsche Chemische Ge- sellschaft and of the American Chem- ical Society; member of the Internation- al Jury of Awards, World's Fair, St. Louis, Mo., 1904; student Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg, 1897-1898; special agent U. S. Census, 1890; president of the N. Y. Chamber of Commerce; is a director of various financial corpora- tions; vice-president of the Rapid Tran- sit Commission, under which the Sub- way has been constructed. U. S. pension agent; born Holland, N. Y., June 28, 1848; educated in the select and public schools of Holland; in 1862, at fourteen years of age, he offered him- self as a volunteer in the Union Army to serve đuri, Civil war, but was rejected on of his youth; tried three times to enlist, but it was not until, Buffalo Press Club, Independent Order
of age, that he succeeded; he entered the One Hundred and Eighty-seventh N. Y. Volunteers as a private, and served un- til the surrender of Lee at Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865; with his reg- iment he took part in the engagement at Hatcher's Run, Oct. 27, 1864, and for gal- lantry in action was awarded the Con- gressional medal of honor; he also took part in the Weldon R. R. raid, Dec. 6 to 11, 1864; the second battle of Hatcher's Run, Feb. 5 to 7, 1865; the battle of Dabney's Mills, March 29, 1865, and Five Forks, Apr. 1, 1865, and all of the most important engagements which marked the overthrow of the Confederacy. At the close of the war he engaged in the lumber and milling business in Holland; has always been an active Republican; served as supervisor of the town of Hol- land on the Erie County Board; in 1876 was elected as member of the N. Y. State Assembly, declining a renomin- ation; for two years he acted as ser- geant-at-arms of the Assembly, and on Jan. 1, 1880, he was appointed special deputy county clerk of Erie Co., which position he held for six years; Nov., 1885, was elected county clerk, and was reelected in 1888; Jan. 3, 1893, he was appointed U. S. pension agent for West- ern New York by President Harrison, but was displaced on the accession of President Cleveland. In 1895 he was ap- pointed state examiner of Courts and Trust funds by State Comptroller James A. Roberts, and in 1898 he was restored to the office of U. S. pension agent by President Mckinley, which position he now holds; appointed by President
Roosevelt a member board of trustees State Soldiers' and Sailors' Home at Bath. Is also chairman of the executive committee of the Logan Veteran Legion and junior vice-commander of the Medal of Honor Legion. In 1886 he was elected senior vice-commander of the New York Department, G. A. R .; was for three terms chairman of the me- morial and executive committee, G. A.
