State botanist of New York; born Sand Lake, N. Y., March 30, 1833 ; son of Joel B. and Pamelia Horton Peck ; prepared for teaching at the Albany State Normal School, from which he was graduated in 1852, and at Union College, graduating in 1859; then taught for three and a half years in a private boarding school for boys, and afterward four years in a pri- vate school in Albany; at the close of this period he took charge of the botany de- partment of the N. Y. State Museum of Natural History, with which he has beer connected up to the present time; has made yearly additions to the State Her- barium, described and published in his an- nual reports many new species of fungi found growing spontaneously in the State, and has sought to have every species of plant, native or naturalized, in the State represented by suitable specimens in the herbarium; was married, in 1861, to Mary C. City, at the Uni- versity of Berlin, and in Rome; was ap- pointed professor of Latin language and literature in Columbia University (1888). a position which he still holds; in classical philology he has published an edition of Suetonius, a book on Latin pronunciation, a volume dealing with the everyday life of the Romans, and A Dictionary of Clas- sical Literature and Antiquities; with Professor E. M. Pease he has edited series of Latin texts in some thirty vol- umes; upon the establishment of The Bookman in 1895, he became its editor-in chief, and has contributed largely to it since that time, as well as to other maga- zines; in conjunction with Mr. Charles Dudley Warner he planned the Library of the World's Best Literature (1895), and at a subsequent period edited separately a series entitled Masterpieces of the World's Literature (20 vols.) ; he was the editor-in-chief of the International Cyclo- pædia (15 vols.), and one of the editors of the New International ' Encyclopedia, consulting editor of the International Year Book, and literary editor of the N. Y. Associate justice of the Supreme Court of the U. S .; born Albany, Nov. 8,, 1838 ; his father was a native of Albany County and had been district attorney of the coun- ty, justice of the Supreme Court of the State, and at the time of his death in the shipwreck of the Ville de Havre, Nov. 22, 1873, was one of the judges of the Court of Appeals of N. Y. State; the son was edu- cated at the Albany Academy and at one of the schools in Philadelphia ; studied law in the office of his father, who was then in partnership with Lyman Tremain, at-


torney-general of the State, practicing law under the firm name of Peckham & Tre- main, in the city of Albany; he was ad- mitted to the Bar of the State in Dec., 1859 ; his father was in that year elected to the bench of the Supreme Court, and the son formed a partnership with the former partner of his father, under the firm name of Tremain & Peckham, which continued until the death of Mr. Tremain in Dec., 1878 ; in 1866 Mr. Peckham was married to a daughter of D. H. Arnold, an old New York merchant, and at that time president of the Mercantile Bank in N. Y. City; ir 1868 he was elected district attorney of Albany County ; was subsequently corpor- ation counsel of Albany City, and in 1883 was elected a justice of the Supreme Court of the State. While serving as such ne was elected, in 1886, an associate judge of the Court of Appeals of N. Y. Artist; born St. Louis, Jan. 18, 1846, but most of her life to the present time has been spent in the eastern section of the country ; in 1860, began art study a the Woman's School of the Cooper Union and concluded under Dr. William Rim oner, of Boston, in 1867; ill health com- pelled a cessation of all study for five years; from 1872 to 1878 traveled abroad, visiting most of the art collections of Eu- rope; spent much time in Rome and a winter in Egypt, Palestine and Constanti nople, returning to Switzerland via the Danube and Vienna; the painting of sev- eral large canvasses was the result of this visit ; in 1888 made a second visit to Paris and studied two years in the Ecole des Beaux Arts des Champs Elysée under the professorships of Jean Paul Laurens, Fer- dinand Humbert and Gaston Saint Pierre ; in 1889 exhibited in the Paris Salon large painting of the Fall of Adam; the fol- lowing year exhibited two pictures, Sa- lomè, and a portrait of her sister, these later exhibited at the National Academy of Design; has been vice-president of the Ladies' Art Association and president of the Liberal Art League of New York; has been an extensive exhibitor in the gal- leries of the country ; has also painted Storm Gods of the Rig-Veda, and don( some black and white illustrations of the Song Celestial, by Edwin Arnold.
